Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Interesting, like you'd expect from NPR.

So, this doesn't belong here, but it doesn't belong on any of the other threads either, and I didn't feel it warranted its own thread.

But, what about Lindsey Vaughn trying to make a comeback? To me it seems like a cry for attention, &/or Lindsey adding herself to the list of athletes who don't know when to quit. But, to be able to ski without pain for the first time in 15 years, is pretty cool. Still, 40 years old and after a partial knee replacement? I'll believe it when I see it. Best of luck tho.

Cry for attention? Doesn't feel that way. She could get attention in any number of ways if she wanted it. It's hard to walk away from something that makes so much money, especially when the money has increased so much since you retired. Good for her, I hope she survives it and has some success.

More power to her. It would be great to see Lindsey and Mikaela Shiffrin compete.

Being retired from competition for nearly 6 years and 40 y/o would seem like sticky wickets, but if she's successful it will make the accomplishment even more significant.

Shiffrin just had a nasty fall where she got impaled by a snow fence pole

One of my best friends’ wife was a professional water skier, very successful (on a lifetime contract with one of the 3 major ski boat companies).

At 35, during a competition, her foot slipped out of the toe plate, and the ski did a 180, with her foot still in the binding.

Besides an immediate and complete destruction of her entire knee, she severed the artery in her leg. She almost bled to death without externally bleeding a drop.

18 months and 5 surgeries later, she won the women’s water ski world championship in Brazil.

She is a personal hero of mine.

Lindsey Vonn finished an impressive fourth in the World Cup super-G in St. Anton on Sunday, the day after finishing sixth in the downhill.

This seems to be the Alpine Sports thread, so:

Much like not considering soup to be a potential entree, if you don't like the downhill, I'm not sure we can be friends!
