I don’t like them because they are sponsored by a religion. I feel that way about many schools. See: BYU, Liberty, Baylor, DePaul, Notre Dame.

Before you list off the other 844 religiously affiliated universities/colleges Gutter, don’t. I don’t dislike them all. Just these 5 stick out to me for various reasons. Most of them because they are the most prominent of their ilk. DePaul bc peeps with DePaul shirts on have ruined two separate Cubs games with incessant chatter of a non-baseball variety.
I just didn't like having Notre Dame games force fed to me every week no matter where I lived in the country and no matter how good or bad Notre Dame was simply because they were THE team for Catholics to cheer for.

This is me too. The “every Saturday on CBS” Notre Dame game was stupid.

This is in response to both Toni (twocoach) and Jeeper (Overlander).
Realize this is coming from someone (me) who lives in the heart of ND country and ND fans, and has been way more "anti" ND than "pro" ND in my lifetime and I am not "arguing" (especially because I basically agree with you) but I'm offering MY perspective.
No one force fed ND on me. I was always free not to watch them. I liked watching them because a. They were often good. b. I liked the teams they played against. c. While I was usually disappointed because of it, most of the time I enjoyed rooting AGAINST them.
Like you, I didn't like them and didn't want/"need" to see them play every week but they had a different opponent each week. Often they were playing other high quality teams when they were being televised.
As I said, I enjoyed watching games and rooting AGAINST ND playing against teams I liked.
Of course ND was (and still is) A team that Catholics cheer for - at what I feel is a nauseating level of fandumb, but there are other teams Catholics cheer for as well. I am friends with and have worked with many people who grew up as ND fans, and still are ND fans, but they attended other colleges/universities and they are bigger fans of the school/s they attended.
Here is the crazy thing (to me). I have always been a BIT of an tOSU fan. I can't say I have ever been a ND fan. At this moment, forgetting the small wager/s I have on the game, I am hoping ND beats tOSU on Monday night. I like rooting for the underdog and I will be happy for my friends and co-workers who haven't celebrated a legit national championship since the 1988 team if their team wins.

I never claimed being forced to watch anything.

For me, it was more that back then, there were 3 channels in danger of showing football games.

And 1/3 is dedicated solely to a team that I had no interest in watching.

I missed seeing a lot of badass Big 8 games.

3 channels maximum for college FB, and one always dedicated to ND, no matter how good or bad they were.

And everything else Overlander and twocoach said on the subject.

Sorry, you have me a bit confused.
I don't know what time period/s you are referring to when you say "back then".
If I am not mistaken (I may be), I believe ABC was the only network that broadcast regular season games in the late 60s and the 70s - and I'm confident there were more "badass" Big 8 games that were televised than than Notre Dame games that were broadcast.
Again, if I am not mistaken (I may be), in the 80s CBS, ABC, and ESPN broadcast college football games. Do you think Notre Dame was your only option to watch?
Like I said, Notre Dame always had an opponent. Did you have no interest in watching any of their opponents?

Early to mid 90s.
NBC had an agreement to only show Notre Dame games on Saturdays.
Saturday was the only day for college football.

2 other national channels, one of which was ABC, who largely had their own non-football programming, left CBS.

I kind of feel like I am being badgered on this, but no...Notre Dame didn't play a lot of opponents that interested me (USC, UCLA, Michigan, etc)

Kansas sanctioned Notre Dame for the exclusive TV deal which screwed every other team, refusing to play ND even stopping scheduling bb games.

I apologize for making you feel badgered but as I said I was (and still am) confused.
Maybe I am misunderstanding you but there were a lot of games on ABC. There were games on ESPN. There were games on Thursdays.
Doesn't really matter. Bottom line is you and I (and everyone else) are in agreement that Notre Dame on NBC at the expense of other teams we would have preferred to have watched was something we didn't like.

ND started the Longhorn Network essentially and did cause the gold rush that hurt the game.
