The most disappointing part is Clemence had an entire sit out year to improve and he seems to be the same player or only marginally improved.
not only individual improvement, but understanding system type things better
he should know the system (and expectations) well enough at this point that doing the nuanced “easy” things in Self’s systems should make him an asset beyond the practice squad. that’s just not the case, unfortunately
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

Hard to believe his stats have remainded nearly identical for his entire career.

Bill Self's results at Kansas with the preseason #1 team:
2004-05: Kansas, 23-7, No. 3 seed, lost to No. 14 Bucknell in the First Round
2009-10: Kansas, 33-3, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 9 Northern Iowa in the Second Round
2018-19 Kansas, 26-10, No. 4 seed, lost to No. 5 Auburn in the Second Round
2023-24 Kansas, 23-11, lost to No. 5 Gonzaga in the Second Round
He has NEVER made it out of the first weekend with the preseason #1 team and this year doesn't look like it's going to be any different. That's insane.
The only of those teams appropriated ranked to start the season was 09/10. That team was absolutely stacked
The last 2 years in particular, I don't have a clue what people saw in us. Nothing about these past 2 rosters makes me see a #1 overall team

Frankly, I think preseason rankings have become utterly worthless in a vast number of sports in large part because it is impossible to accurately predict how these sports will play out with so many rosters shake ups. In general, Bill Self gets a lot of credit for being an elite coach no matter what his roster looks like.

That's shocking. Especially for a top 50 recruit.
Whose minutes would he take? He isn't ever going to be better than Bidunga or Dickinson and Self won't play him over KJ. It took back to back ass whippings for Self to even start playing Moore and Bidunga more.
Last year, sure. We had the jewel of the portal, a lot of other nice portal pieces (one of whom wasn't even kicked off the team yet), and the top burger PG and a couple other nice 4-star pieces outta HS, to complement a returning core we could assume would develop at a rate similar to how most other program guys tend to develop (one of whom wasn't even injured until literally still today yet)
considering all that, I'm ok with the preseason #1 two seasons ago.
Instead, the jewel of the portal lived up to the criticism just as much as the hype, one trouble-prone transfer started even more trouble yet and got kicked off the team, other transfers didn't pan out, the true freshmen looked like true freshmen, one program guy went from looking like the next big star to being injured until literally still today yet, and the other program guys seemed less like they developed and more like they plateaued, or even regressed.
considering all that, I think another preseason #1 felt a little more like fool's gold...even if we had another top recruiting class of portal guys and HS studs.
The narrative was very much that some right combo of newcomers at the 2-3 plus depth was the key to maximizing (or even justifying) the returning core. And more and more that seemed and seems like a silly assumption.

Took me awhile to remember who you were even talking about. Fucking arterio morris.
Self has had some bad luck the last w seasons.
The arterio morris debacle
Hunter commitment scaring off BOTH zuby and udeh
Mccullar injury
Elmarko injury
Shak injury
I never got the Arterio Morris hype. He sucked his one year at Texas. He is currently shooting 37% from the floor and 23% from three for South Plains College.
Whatever happened to the talk regarding Bill Self’s hair(toupee) (a topic often discussed back in the dot commie era)?Saw him at the game today and it just looked like a normal head of hair.

It's hit or miss.
He's got some questionable pregame hotel Gurley interviews out there looking a little suspect.

He a 5 star McDonald's American. Top ranked pg in his class. He was quick quick. Like dotson type quickness. He struggled at Texas too, but played behind good upperclassman and was starting to come on strong at the end of the season
I imagine being out of basketball awhile set him back a little, but his shooting wasn't his strength

I saw in today’s KC Star that Bill is dissatisfied with fan enthusiasm this year, particularly the student body. “I don’t feel the student hype the way I used to.”
Pretty ballsy to call out the fans when you put out a mediocre product two years running. I don’t see the intensity from Self that I used to, either.

Not sure how that applies. I’m just saying Bill needs to look in the mirror first.

Oh, it applies. But I agree, Self probably should (not necessarily "needs") to do some reflecting of his own if he hasn't already. I have a feeling he has. I'm just wondering if/when it gets to the point where he decides he's had enough. Today's college basketball world can't be as enjoyable for him as it used to be. Can it?
