One of the people who served jail time for taking part in the US Capitol riot four years ago has refused a pardon from President Donald Trump, saying: "We were wrong that day."

Pamela Hemphill, who pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 60 days in prison, told the BBC that there should be no pardons for the riot on 6 January 2021.

"Accepting a pardon would only insult the Capitol police officers, rule of law and, of course, our nation," she said.

"I pleaded guilty because I was guilty, and accepting a pardon also would serve to contribute to their gaslighting and false narrative."

Hemphill, who was nicknamed the "Maga granny" by social media users - in reference to Trump's "make America great again" slogan - said she saw the Trump government as trying to "rewrite history and I don't want to be part of that".

"We were wrong that day, we broke the law - there should be no pardons," she told the BBC World Service's Newsday programme.
Thanks.

Then tell each of the states that their residents no longer have to submit federal tax payments.

yeah, let’s see the majority of the bible belt states take care of themselves come hurricanes and floods

you know, those same states that “supple on the federal teat” and take more than they give

that’ll end well
Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

After a few more years of this, you won't have to be as gullible, willing to swallow almost any conspiracy in your desperation to find relief from your many fears and confirmation for your biases and bigotries like the cult is today, in order to fall for the firehose of lies and misinformation your cult leader and his oligarchs are dishing. Because, you'll either have never known anything different or will have forgotten what is was like back when Americans had every expectation that their elected officials would at least feign some association with quaint concepts like reality, and the truth.

We need whistleblowers in these companies and pray a candidate like Obama can rise up in the next four years and reverse this.

Or pray harder and somehow the people force a new party for the workers - a party of which has a true primary focus on the lower and middle classes.

In the meantime fight against misinformation at your own level like I am attempting to do here.

oh, just seeing this "candidate like Obama" comment.

I'll agree in the principle that we need some candidate like Obama who can campaign on some message of, and deliver some substance of, "Hope" and "Change," which I think are forward-looking (which is, dare I say, progressive) values, rather than some regressive "Make America Great Again" sort of ideal to return to some sentimental bygone era that never quite existed anyway...or, if it DID exist, it existed in the worst kinda ways.

But I think the tricky part is actually delivering on progressive values without scaring too many off or otherwise rendering one's campaign as "not viable" cuz it gets dismissed as too progressive.

I mean, if we can heed Biden's departing address about "an oligarchy is coming," just bear in mind that sorta messaging is like precisely what Bernie campaigned on in like 2016 and 2020 too.

And that's not to say Bernie is some kinda silver bullet of a candidate! Not by any stretch! It's more just to say, let's not cut off our noses to spite our faces here.

Obama had charisma. Biden doesn't, Harris doesn't, Hillary certainly didn't.

yea, charisma is very important toward winning elections.

I meant more in the context of not simply winning elections, but of the "fight against misinformation" perpetrated overwhelmingly by some oligarchical ruling class.

we need substance to go with that charisma.

I think trump's time in office may try to push our boundaries of what we actually feel is humane and just. Those who didn't vote in the election may ( hopefully ) look around and see the damage being done.

So simply not doing that anymore would drive voters out to vote for something different.

The concern is, are there enough people who won't be duped into putting the blame of the damage on other groups of people they don't like/taught to fear? Are there enough people not doing their own research and not simply believing every word that comes from the current administrations lying mouth?

While I agree with that 100%, I'm wondering what happened to the ousdahl who gives Demos unrelenting shit for not pulling one progressive policy rabbit out of a hat after another despite having razor thin "majorities"*, whether we're talking about the Middle East, Russia,, i.e., geopolitics, or immigration and border policies, along with any and every other policy we'd all like to see enacted, but can't accomplish because of political reality?

*And, is it really a "Demo majority" when it includes Senators Joe Manchin, and Kyrsten Sinema?

I really am afraid that if there's one single thing Kamala could have done differently to defeat Trump, it was pump the brakes on Gaza. There was so much to suggest so, yet she didn't.

And now there's data to suggest that really was a big deal, maybe the single biggest deal, among voters who would have otherwise been expected to vote dem.

There's plenty of other progressive issues we could dissect, but for now let's leave it to that.

Let's also consider, "MAGA granny," the old lady who rejected her pardon.

That's who Kamala and Dems went after instead.

That's to say, rather than pick up potentially millions of votes by just making their campaign a tad more progressive, Dems decided to go all in on picking up the votes from the like 6 total Magaheads who since soured on Trump.
