Chuck Person lost his job on the Auburn bench.

Auburn players Austin Wiley and Danjel Purifoy were ruled ineligible for the 2017-18 season after the university self-reported violations involving recruiting, extra benefits and agents. Purifoy was also suspended for 30 percent of the 2018-19 season and didn't play in the Tigers' first nine games this season.

I'm in support of suspension for violations.
They should be equal.
If there's evidence Purifoy's family got 11k to convince him to attend, and he was suspended for 30% of a season, then I don't agree with the 2 seasons that the NCAA slammed down on DeSousa.

I think the issue with SDS is they are believing (and punishing) for more than the few thousand that Kansas fans are willing to concede happened. They're punishing based on 40k-ish worth of benefits (or whatever the alleged number is).

I'm more worried about Self or KT facing suspensions than SDS at this point. I think the odds of SDS getting his suspension reduced significantly is somewhat unlikely. Especially after hearing Mark Emmret speak yesterday. They're going to hammer the teams/coaches caught up in this.

wait, where's that 40k-ish number coming from?

I thought the only number ever really in question was the 2 grand, and the problem with it is the source of the money.

didn't it go something like, the NCAA said, "now hypothetically, could the guy who gave the money be called a booster?"

for the sake of a hypothetical, sure.

"GOTCHA!"

It is worthless to try to find logic or precedent for what's happening to SDS.

That's not really how it went either. But it's fun to play pretend.

After refreshing my memory it wasn't 40k but rather an additional 20k that was agreed to, but apparently never delivered.

They didn't trick us into calling him a booster. By definition he's a booster.

They said if you want a ruling on this now then you're going to have to agree with us that he's a booster (which by definition he is)...the reason we agreed is because during the appeal we can change that stance and say he's not a booster. Which I'm assuming we are doing...the appeal process is heard by a different group than who decided the original punishment. So we will see how it plays out.

The idea that Kansas was tricked is kind of silly....and it'd be pretty embarrassing for Kansas if they weren't protecting themselves from being tricked by consulting with attorneys (they were).

so they didn't trick us into calling him a booster, they just shamelessly leveraged us into doing so, even though it sounds like calling him a booster was never our intent

(until the NCAA apparently acted like doing so would be to our benefit, at least in an expedient way, even though it was to our detriment, since they were apparently doing it just to build the toughest case possible against us)

and though, again, we weren't tricked, we are now exercising the appeals process to clarify that we never intended to call him what they said we should call him.

let's play pretend some more!

By definition, everyone's a booster. Which is the point.

It's all a distraction, though, from (a) the fundamental unfairness and arbitrariness of the entire fucking thing; and (b) the specific unfairness of Silvio losing two fucking years over what, even by the ridiculous standards that exist, should have been a 9-game thing - and with us essentially self-imposing, no less.

Someone said it well on pre game stuff Saturday or Sunday....."fair isn't always equal"

Which is exactly right. It's fair for these players to be able to have outside opportunities that should be none of the NCAAs business, even though that won't equally impact all schools.

It's not like things are equal now. Kansas has better facilities than other schools. Nearly all of them.

There are myriad examples of how things are definitely not at all equal right now. Dorms and locker rooms are great examples.

And the schools don't want equal. They just don't want their piece of the pie getting any smaller.

Anytime a group is used to controlling 100% of something (in this case the money) they're not going to willingly give up control of any piece of that pie (the money).....and the players have no seat at the table or representation to look out for them.

KU built a new Business school and extended the Engineering school to be competitive and attract more students. These facilities help a number of students better perfect their future profession. It isn't specifically just for one business student or one specific engineering student.

You could argue you could learn business/engineering in some old limestone converted parking lot.

So that's the reason why basketball players shouldn't be able to profit from NIL?

Why are those 2 related?

Adidas being able to pay a college player in advance so that they sign with Adidas when they turn pro won't mean regular students can't have new classrooms.

Business and engineering students can make thousands of dollars a week, while in school, from private enterprise.

Yup.

Know why the schools don't care?...because they don't think it makes their pool of income any smaller.

The ONLY reason they're resisting change with athletes is because they don't want their share of the pie shrinking.

The subject was that things weren't fair, like dorm or locker rooms.
Business and engineering students also don't get many of the advantages/benefits that a KU basketball player does.
There are also examples of students getting underpaid or not paid at all for work they do at a university to better their experience and connections.

I think you open a can of worms ( and there's already lots of cans of lots of worms ) that would result in even more venues a universities athletic department could funnel money into buying the best players if you allowed players to take jobs or merchandise money. I would prefer the opposite of that.
