heard on the local news this morning that Alta had two straight nights where it didn’t get below freezing

i’m just waiting for the avalanche reports that are likely to follow

Is Alta still considered where the heads go?

When I first skied there ~ 1990, before the 2002 Olympics ruined everything, a lift ticket during the week was $10, and there we no lift lines. You'd ski down, get on the lift, and ski down again, until you were so tired you couldn't any more. And the bus from SLC was only $1.00, there, and $1.00 back.

i was told by an old landlord that Brighton is where the “locals/townies” go, but i’ve only ever been to any of them during the summer. the “red snake” is the current scourge encountered when the bums try to get down the canyon…the miles long trail of tail lights. i haven’t looked recently, but i’m reminded to check on the gondola status

i used to ski quite a bit, but it’s just not my thing anymore. i’ve skied many times since, but i had a gnarly accident at Snow Creek when i was young that landed my in hospital for a bit

we’ve talked about doing the rental thing at least once since we live here, just haven’t done it yet

Ahhh, I got the impression you hadn't ever done it.

I can totally see doing it so much you get tired of it, or avoiding it after an injury.

I was told by 2 neurosurgeons ~ 1.5 years ago that I shouldn't snow ski, (or play golf), anymore because of my back, or I would be going this winter.

I like exerting myself and suffering and have cross country skied before and loved it, (even had my own skis for years), so I'm considering looking into doing that. The prospect of having to do it all alone makes it less attractive.

well sure, of course thats a given. But. I also take great joy in being outdoors alone sometimes. It's just different. Quiet, calm, just...its what my soul needs sometimes I think. I think thats why I enjoy trapping and to some extent hunting because i do thay alone more often than not too. Nobody is anywhere around, you pay attention to the little things more when you're alone.

well sure, of course thats a given. But. I also take great joy in being outdoors alone sometimes. It's just different. Quiet, calm, just...its what my soul needs sometimes I think. I think thats why I enjoy trapping and to some extent hunting because i do thay alone more often than not too. Nobody is anywhere around, you pay attention to the little things more when you're alone.

I know what you mean. I'm not averse to being alone whatsoever. My bike rides usually last a couple of hours, and I'm alone with my thoughts, outside, the entire time.* The symmetry and cadence of pushing the pedals hard mile after mile becomes hypnotic. And, of course, I'm alone ~ 98% of every day whether I'm on my bike, or not.

Thankfully, I'm too curious to ever be bored.

But, when it comes to traveling and having "new" experiences in new places, for me, it's not the same when there's no one to share it with. I wish it weren't so.


*Prior to November, I would usually be listening to a podcast, making an effort to always be up on current events and politics. Not anymore. I've been trying, working in campaigns, since before I was old enough to vote, and this is what America wants? Really? SMFH. I can use a break.
