Even Barnes turned down the UCLA gig. Who else can they get? That seemed like their best short term option.

Barnes is 64, Cronin is 47. So, in that regard that favors Cronin.

In every other regard, Barnes woulda been a much better hire. He's had more success, he's been at higher profile schools, he's recruited better players, etc.

It'll be interesting to see how Cronin handles the jump...also how he handles increased media scrutiny. I don't think picking fights with opposing players will go over well.

I think Barnes was just trying to get himself a bigger raise. Smart move.

Cronin has 6 NCAA tournament wins and 6 first round exits in his 16 years as a D1 coach. Not exactly the type of Mr. One and Done they were targeting.

Has he had any real blue chip recruits other than Lance Stephenson?

It'll be interesting to see how he can recruit at UCLA. My perception is he got a lot of tough players and then coached them up at Cincinnati...I'm not sure you can get the results UCLA demands taking that route.

Maybe Barnes would have been a better hire. Maybe not. We'll never know for sure.
Thing is based on your criteria - I assume I am supposed to conclude that there were better options than Bill Self for KU?
If I was Dan Guerrero I wouldn't have hired Cronin. Dude has had some serious issues with his hiring choices. Chip Kelly seemed like a good choice. Then he went 3-9 in his first season. If early returns are an indicator for the future - might as well have hired front butt.

Ok, so this kind of blew my mind this morning. I got a phone call from 310 206 5991. Didn't answer it. Person left a voice mail message.
"Hi - This is Mick Cronin and I am excited to be the new head coach of UCLA men's basketball".......
Yes, it was a recorded message but WTF?
Or maybe as Jeep and DC prefer to respond - JFC.
