Believe what you want but Grimes went from a top 10 lotto pick to potentially undrafted. Where we as fans want to point the blame that resonates with kids.
I like our trend of turning guys ranked outside the top 40 or so into guys who make some NBA money. Mason. Graham. Twins. Etc.
I do not like our trend of taking guys who are looked at as lotto/high lotto coming into the year and turning them into worse picks.....part of it is just purely being overrated coming out of high school, so it is unavoidable. But we've had a couple really highly rated guys who flopped once they got to KU. Cliff Alexander was supposed to be a high lotto pick. Coming to KU was the wrong choice for him..had he gone to Illinois he easily would have averaged 15+/8+ and had enough athletic plays/dunks to maintain a lotto pick position.....he'd have still flopped in the NBA, because he wasn't that good/was overrated coming out of HS where BBIQ doesn't matter as much and strong physical guys can dominate smaller players, but at least he'd have gotten a decent payday....Grimes isn't quite as bad. I'm not sure he killed his draft position quite as bad as Cliff. If Grimes impresses at the combine and workouts then he could probably overcome the bad season and have a team take him 1st round...diallo went from lotto or mid 1st to late 2nd. Thankfully he's really adjusted and developed in his few years and he appears to be on track for a long career....
Then we've got guys like embiid who went from unknown to high lotto (and now he is a top 5-10 player in the league)...I don't know how much credit we deserve for Embiid, but I don't think we deserve all the blame for the guys listed above either, so you take the good with the bad.
I don't think we need to be in a panic mode about recruiting. I think a reasonable outcome of this FBI drama is that we'd have a lull for a year or 2. We are seeing the impact this year for the first time.
