The optics of this are pretty obvious: RJ leveraged recruiting interest into a big pay check. This one legit. Irony stings everyone but the NCAA, who are incapable of understanding irony.

If they make a bad decision and never get to the NBA...tough, that's life.
Maybe everyone should be able to play four years in college even if pro dreams evaporate later. Kind of crazy rule really.

The rule is not stupid if you own an NBA team. It's their rule and it makes a lot of sense.

RJ had no interest in college basketball and went off to make money. Makes sense for him.

Sure. And let them monetize their name, image and likeness as and when they want.

Again, we're so accustomed (even numb) to players leaving that we forget: in a world where players could access the value they clearly have, we wouldn't even be thinking about Dedric and Devon leaving.

More about collegiate basketball as an experience and a way to get an education, less about individuals getting money.
This doesn't mean ELIMINATE money - it isn't one way or the other - but shift it further in this direction rather than the other.

So only white people ( honkeys? ) have interest in an education.
Got it.

Would you prefer Dotson not come back? He doesn't want to play for free.

https://theathletic.com/996714/2019/05/ ... ine-nears/
A headline last week that read Devon Dotson was likely to return to Kansas next season confused his family. Nothing Dotson or anyone from his camp had said hinted at such.

The truth is Dotson is squarely on the fence as he weighs whether to stay in the draft or return to Kansas for his sophomore season, his father told The Athletic.

[...]

It obviously does not hurt that Dotson knows he’d be returning to a competitive team, but his father said the KU side of things will not factor into his decision.

I want to tread very carefully here, but: generally speaking, the players positioned to absorb the opportunity cost of playing in college (as opposed to professionally somewhere, anywhere) tend to be of a certain demographic.

It is inarguable that opening up name/image/likeness will result in kids from disadvantaged backgrounds going to school longer.

But apparently that's not what college basketball should be about.

I think it would be in the best interest of our society if what you are speaking to changed and that a value of a free collegiate education was not taken for granted.

I'm trying to digest this - are you saying the real problem here is the youths not attributing a high-enough intrinsic value to a college education?

A. Absorbing an opportunity cost should be looked at long term. A kid is going to college. For free. There are no costs to continue to support said kid. Then that kid is better off long term, especially if he applies himself.
B. There's still a gap in wealth equality and I get that. I'm not going to debate all of the steps to fix this but I do think one change ( of many ) that needs to be made is investing in the importance of an education amongst all demographics. If you don't end up playing basketball professionally, having experience at a higher learning institution can likely set you up for a better career path than having none. Kids and parents should better understand this. To promote collegiate sports as just another gig to make money as a stopgap to the NBA is the opposite of what I think it should be.
C. For the RJ Hamptons of the world, who are probably good enough to play professionally sooner rather than later, and have zero interest in college ( I don't just mean the NCAA/Conference play/NCAA tournament but COLLEGE ) there are professional leagues ( and one of them should be the NBA - the age rule should be dropped ) available.

We are fans of a program that is not your average NCAA hoops program. A significantly larger % of players who get scholarships to play at Kansas have legitimate goals of pursuing basketball as their profession. They are coming to Kansas to get an education in basketball just as a hopeful doctor comes to KU to study medicine. That is not the case at the vast majority of NCAA D1 programs.

Some KU fans perspective is skewed significantly as to what the norm is as a result of what our norm is so they paint the problems of the entire sport with a very broad brush.

There is not a limited period in which one can go to college. There is a limited period in which one can make money playing basketball. It is 100% true that if kids could access more of their value while going to college, there would be a meaningful change in how long kids stay in college.

I would tend to think that nothing would promote all the virtues of college better than expanding access to it, particularly among demographics with very low college attendance. Again, getting more value to players will attract them to college ball, and encourage them to stay longer.

Is it possible that Hampton would have gone down this road if the money was equal? Sure. But the powers that be in college basketball should realize that a kid who seemed to have no academic issues choosing to play in relative media anonymity is not a good sign. College basketball, as a system, seems intent on squandering its enormous competitive advantages over all non-NBA options when it comes to being the preferred spot for talented high school players to play ball.
