The Nazi's were seemingly an overwhelming obstacle.

But just keep in mind, Eisenhower didn't have to deal with Bette Midler.

Or Jim Acosta. That guy is like the Italians, Nazi's and the Japanese all rolled into one.

If it's bright and sunny tomorrow, remember that it wasn't at all like that on D-day. We were at the D-Day Memorial on a cold, rainy, overcast day when the North Sea was kicking up something fierce, much like the original day some 60 years before.

Our friend from Overland Park who jumped in lost his rifle and all his gear on the way down. He said he picked up a gun from a dead soldier and found 2 others from his squad and they fought for 8 days under a lieutenant from another unit in the 82nd Airborne (they were 101st) until reunited with their own platoon.

Sitting through D-Day ceremonies, one gains a whole new impression of Ike. Each country that was part of the invasion has a speaker who gives a speech in both English and French. The British naval guy was a great favorite, as his speech was extremely short. After the speech, the national anthem of each country is played and representatives come forward with flowers from each one.

One gets the sense of the diplomacy that Ike must have exercised to corral these various groups into one invasion force, to make it happen, and moves to a different level of respect for him. That he was able to deal with Montgomery, whose own troops hated him, was especially impressive.

Good for Jake Tapper.
