not as worried about cougars (he he) as i am bears around here...been considering re-upping on some bear spray

a group encountered a bear on a trail just outside of SLC recently, Dog Lake. they fired a sidearm in the air, causing the bear to charge. sow with cub. i think i woulda waited until i saw some aggression before firing a warning shot, personally.

I dunno. Bears cause more trouble as a whole. But their presence still seems more as a foraging nuisance.

Sitting here eating breakfast I just had a black bear walk right up to the front door. I yelled at it and it ran off into the yard. Threw a rock and it kept running.

I guess with cougars it’s just the thought that if you encounter one, you may not even notice it until it’s going all predator on you.

Ultimately, officers put the bear down because it attacked a human, but also because it was “one of the most aggressive, if not the most aggressive, bears (officers) have ever seen in that area.”

So we get a report from y’all out on a bike ride that there’s a dead elk on one of the trails. Y’all are sure it must’ve been just killed by a cougar, just recently, no less, that no doubt gonna keep killing and terrorize the whole community.

So we send the trails guy out to check and, sure enough, there’s a cow elk dead on the trail. No sign of predatory wildlife, but it does have a gunshot wound, a little high and back from the vitals.

The east side of the ranch abuts national forest, where hunters can legally hunt. The ranch property itself is private property where hunting is not allowed.

If an animal is shot on national forest (or other permitted property) then runs onto private property, a hunter can still retrieve it, if he contacts the wildlife officer. The officer notifies the landowner, then escorts the hunter to the kill, but not before confirming the hunter shot it on land he’s permitted to hunt - usually by following the blood trail.

But, surprise! Gun season for cow elk isn’t in season yet. Even if the hunter had permission to hunt the land, he’s poaching out of season, so of course he’s not gonna call the wildlife officer to help him come get it.

Now we at the ranch have to deal with a dead rotting elk carcass that’ll now go to waste.
