Today in "so much winning"!
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
I just learned today that there is a newish grant program that takes money from H1B fees and turns around and uses it to fund proposals to try and get more American kids to enter those fields where we drastically need more people to fill jobs.
New York, my state, already has a program that reimburses STEM college tuition for the best and brightest NYS high school students.
A masters degree is typically needed to advance quickly and high in engineering firms (it depends on the specific field, of course). Yet many engineering graduate programs have a hard time recruiting American engineering grads because there are big bucks and plenty of openings for those students with only the BS degree. I’m not faulting those students at all. My point is how many many open engineering jobs there are to fill and there are simply not enough students willing to put in the work for an engineering degree.

Re: Today in "so much winning"!
we cant get enough of our teens to study math and continue in stem. Who is going to fix our roads and plan our growing cities? Do you bitch when your medical doctor doesn’t speak English as their first language? Do you lament that other countries are getting richer than the US? Do you hear whining that there are no jobs for high school grads? IMO, more parents need to be buying desks for their kids rather than Disney and designer cloths. If you do all three, great for you.
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
Sounds like it is more an issue of not seeing value in passing up good paying jobs now to continue their education rather than not being "willing to put in the work".DrPepper wrote: ↑Tue Aug 27, 2019 1:05 pm I just learned today that there is a newish grant program that takes money from H1B fees and turns around and uses it to fund proposals to try and get more American kids to enter those fields where we drastically need more people to fill jobs.

If only there was a national political party looking to reduce/eliminate the cost of some college degrees, allowing students to feel less pressure to enter the work force in part to start paying off their student loans...
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
Good point.
And my issue with students not wanting to put in the work was directed at K-12 students rather than the recent Engineering BS grads.

Re: Today in "so much winning"!
I wish more high schools had Engineering classes specifically. My kid's schools has a decent amount but I doubt most have as many.
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
I know in the Chicago Public Schools there is a strong push toward STEM Programs - Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. Hearing there's quite a bit of success with it, too.
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
public schools generally do not even have a “real” computer science teacher who has the time to keep up with the times.
I keep seeing STEM+C which is a term to indicate that writing code and managing data are included in the chemistry, bio, etc classes. In otherwords, computer science gets incorporated rather than its own special class.
I view engineering in a similar way. Eng is so multifaceted (electrical, Civil, mechanical, computer, chemical, geotechnical, bio, etc etc etc) that it cant have specialization in high school. Rather, take as much math as possible, also take as much physics as offered, get exposure to what engineers do (ie, design and build (but rarely study) things). And enjoy creative problem solving, logic, and tinkering.

really wish i’d taken more computer science classes

Uh oh: It's still too early... but if the Orange Menace can't run for reelection on the economy, he's really going to have to ramp up the racism and resentment of white people, as well as his assistance from Putin.

Re: Today in "so much winning"!
Anyone know if housing sales, remodels, repairs, add anything to the economy?
(Answer: Yes.)
...Mortgage bankers appear to be blaming Trump for the lack of buying...
“U.S. Treasury yields were volatile over the course of the week, as the ongoing trade dispute between the U.S. and China continued to generate uncertainty among investors. Rates increased for the first time since the week of July 12, but were still 80 basis points lower than the beginning of the year,” said Joel Kan, MBA’s Associate Vice President of Economic and Industry Forecasting.
“With rates edging higher, refinances and purchase applications fell, at 8 percent and 6 percent, respectively.”
Added Kan, “Purchase applications were still up around 2 percent year-over-year last week, but the drop in rates this summer have not yet led to a significant boost in activity. Uncertainty over the near-term economic outlook and low supply continue to be the predominant headwinds for prospective homebuyers.”
So, why exactly is The Fed being urged to cut rates?

Re: Today in "so much winning"!
Some in this country are very eager for a recession and will do whatever they can to speed one up.
I know why. But it makes no sense to me as we are all in the same boat.

Re: Today in "so much winning"!
I think they're a bit overrated.
A college degree isn't necessarily needed to get a software engineering job.
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
Yeah I have a cousin who took some like 5 week coding or programming course or something, and now he’s got some sweet tech nerd job
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
Who who?!
Millennials who can otherwise only dream about purchasing their own home?
nm, millennials don’t purchase anything. Purchasing means they earned it. Millennials only want handouts, right?
Re: Today in "so much winning"!
You keep banging this lame drum without giving even a moment of thought as to WHY. There is money to be made in a drawback, no more so than by the mega rich, who are flush with cash after Trump's tax break.
Financial peons like me also see some opportunities for gains in certain investments but those dont require a recession to capitalize. Frankly, I'll make more money off my speculation on what will happen if Trump loses in 2020 than if a recession happens.
Others are waiting for a drawback so that home prices come down to a more realistic level and they can get more for their money. My home is paid off and I will not be selling it for 12 more years so I am personally unaffected by this. But I work with multiple people who are monitoring and waiting, hoping prices come down from their currently absurd level here locally.
So your silly "people want a recession just so that Trump looks bad" shtick is a lazy take.

Re: Today in "so much winning"!
Wait. Can you clarify this? Are you saying recession is a good thing because it will bring housing prices down so millenials can buy a home? Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point. I hope I am.

There are benefits that exist in any change of the economy in any direction. It just depends on what you're hoping to do.TDub wrote: ↑Wed Aug 28, 2019 10:42 amWait. Can you clarify this?
