Can We Bring Back Millstones?

Post by seahawk »

Because the sadism toward children is truly disgusting.

A 12-year-old Bahamian girl was separated from family at a South Florida airport after fleeing the destruction of Hurricane Dorian and was sent by U.S. Customs officials to a Miami Gardens shelter for abused or abandoned children.

Kaytora Paul, 12 — accompanied by her godmother — had flown from Nassau to West Palm Beach Sunday night after being evacuated from the hurricane-ravaged Abaco island. However, when the two landed in Florida, U.S. Customs and Border Protection transferred them over to Miami International Airport and ultimately separated the pair because the woman wasn’t the child’s biological parent, the girl’s mother, Katty Paul, told the Miami Herald Tuesday.

Here's the incredible part:

Getting her child back won’t be easy. The mother, although having arrived in Miami on Tuesday, can’t pick her up. Paul was told she had to go through the process of applying to be her daughter’s sponsor with HHS. In order to get custody of her daughter, Paul would have to collect documentation that would prove she’s her mother — like a birth certificate, government identification as well as proof of address. In the past, this process has taken anywhere from weeks to months.

She would have to provide unavailable documentation because CBP and HHS haven't heard of DNA, which could indicate in a very short time whether they are related.

Eh, I have a copy of my child's birth certificate in a safe. Dont most people keep a copy of their kid's birth certificates? And if she was traveling from the Bahamas to the US then she should already have a govt ID.

No but I keep our birth certificates and passports in a little fire safe that is part of the "stuff to grab" if we have time to prep to evacuate in case of a tornado. And like I said, the kid traveled to the US so they clearly have some portion of their documentation in hand.

I just think the media plays up some timelines for max effect.

Good lord. No one blamed anyone for anything. I just view time frame details like the ones given with a certain level of skepticism.

In this case, I'd give the parents a pass as I listened last week to relatives talking about living through Michael and they were inland and it just lasted a few hours. Have heard people who lived through Andrew, which again, didn't last 40 hours. I can't even imagine what that must have been like.

Also, the story is from the Miami Herald, where they are familiar with storm stories and immigrant stories. Now I'm going to make sure where my passport is.

Even Americans with passports/birth certificates get questioned at border crossings. A 12-yr old female traveling without a parent fits the profile of a kid becoming the victim of sex traffickers.

This is an unfortunate situation. We want understanding for the emergency situation. We also want to protect the kid. In hindsite, they should have sent the 19 year kid with the godmother to keep the minor children with one of the parents.

We commonly get questioned crossing the border between Canada and the US with my kid. All the parents need to approve (ie notorized letter if a parent is not physically present).

Courts determine parental relations every day, based on DNA evidence. It would be far less costly to test mother and daughter than to keep this child in some horrific placement.

And those facilities in South Florida are horrible, according to women I know who've been down there.

I live in a border town. It used to be fun and easy to travel back and forth to Canada. That all changed on 9-11. Now we only go when we have to. And you better have your good proof.

Were there 150 mph winds buffeting your car when you traveled to Canada?

Well, they've lost their home and their livelihoods, but at least the family got their child back. The Miami Herald seems to be on a roll.

Federal government officials told the Miami Herald that U.S. Department of Health and Human Services expedited the reunification process after the child’s case sparked public outrage. HHS told Florida officials that the U.S. government “was unaware the girl was a hurricane survivor” at the time of separation.
