GTS Rules 2019-20

Post by pdub »

KU basketball opens Nov 5 v Duke.
Changing the rules just a bit for Guess The Score.
If I start a donation thing to help pay for hosting costs and we somehow go over, there'd be a prize, but otherwise, the prize is kcrim pride.

SUBMITTING GUESSES: I will post a "Guess The Score" message well in advance of each game which will include the scheduled start time and TV information. Please post your guess in that message thread using the following format for your guesses:

KU 74
KSU 64

THE FORMAT THIS YEAR WILL BE STRICT -- the scraping program i'm going to write is going to directly look for the characters that I post as an example at the top of Guess the Score. Follow them. If you don't, you won't get entered, and then you'll have to say, "hey, I got a 100 but I guessed" and then i'll say, "rules - you posted KU 100 ksuck 30", and then I'll enter your score in but penalize you 20 points. Time is money. Be sure to put KU's score first even if you have them loosing.

- Predictions must be made BEFORE the start of the game. This doesn't mean tip - it means the time listed on GTS and the website. Predictions submitted after that time won't count. If you're even one minute late, it doesn't count. Sorry, you've been warned.

- IF YOU DECIDE TO CHANGE A PREDICTION PLEASE MAKE A NEW POST AND DON'T EDIT YOUR OLD ONE. The one that will be counted is the latest one, assuming it is posted before tipoff. That way I don't have to go back and recheck posts at the end to make sure someone hasn't edited something.

- NO excess commentary in the prediction. Just the score guess, nothing more. This is to make it simpler to record scores. Excess commentary is a 20 point deduction.

SCORING: The points you receive will be based on two factors: margin of victory and actual score. Margin of victory is weighted twice as much as the actual score. Absolute value of the difference is used. (NOTE - this is the same as in prior years)

Example:
--------
Predicted score:
KU 74
KSU 64

Actual:
KU 90
KSU 87

Margin of victory:
------------------
Predicted (74-64) = 10
Actual (90-87) = 3

Points = (10-3)*2 = 14

Actual Score:
-------------
KU (90-74) = 16
KSU (87-64) = 23

Again absolute value of the numbers are used so no negatives!

Total Score:
------------
14 + 16 + 23 = 53

THIS CONTEST IS LIKE GOLF - LOW SCORES ARE GOOD; HIGH SCORES ARE BAD.

Exceptions:
-----------
- If you incorrectly choose the winner of the game you will receive a score of 100.

- You will receive a score of -50 points for guessing the EXACT score for each team. Remember, low score = good.

- It is possible to pick the right winner but be so far off on the margin of victory that you get a score greater than 100. Since it doesn't seem fair to penalize a correct winner guess more than one that is wrong, the score for a correct winner guess will be capped at 99.

- Lastly, if you fail to submit a guess for any game (or if it is late), your score for that game is 100.

Plano's dumbass has already failed miserably at following your directions. Which is surprising for someone as smart as him.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I can merge trustees post into a post I create and own that post.
So the ball ( pun intended ) is in his court.

I'll score it eventually.
But the GTS post trustee owns.
Nothing I can do about it now.

Aiming for this weekend ( i.e. you'll see something Monday ) to jam the GTS stuff out.
Til then, keep guessing.

I haven't really QA'd this - I just checked the leaders score manually to what my algorithm came out with and it matched - so be sure to double check your score and we can QA it together.

I'll style it and do more things with it later.
As a forewarning, from now on, if you don't match the score entry labeled on the top of every GTS thread ( and on the first post here in this stickied thread ) that means I have to manually enter your score.

Pdub hates extra work so that means a + 20 to your score which is not good.

To be honest, the most important part is to use a space after your guess as I'm searching for single spaces and not multiple spaces or dashes etc.

I'll tinker with the code when I have time to build in conditionals to look for different named teams and also dashes instead of spaces but for now, just abide by entering exactly as provided in the GTS header.

Updated from last nights game.

I kind of like that PWhitt.

Will be even better once we see breakdown but I like it. Not just because I'm first!

it’s a nice addition for sure

imo, if you’ve got to have columns it would make more sense to go top-bottom rather left-right

(i know, i know...beggars can’t be choosers...)

I disagree.
I like the top 3 being on the top row.
