2019 College Football Season
Re: 2019 College Football Season
That was really a brain dead move on my part to think the Big 12 didn't have a championship game. I know/knew better than that. I was probably thinking because there aren't two separate divisions - there was no championship game. Dumb.
As hartjack said, 3 SEC and Clemson and I would have to think most non-SEC fans will want to start campaigning for a different system - such as 8 teams. Granted, it's hard to argue those 3 SEC teams didn't deserve to be in the top 4.
My problem is if the system does go to an 8 (or more) team playoff, how many projected first round draft picks sit out playoff games?
I was thrilled to see McCaffrey play in person in the Rose Bowl in 2016. One of the greatest college football performances I have witnessed. Equally impressive to me was watching how hard he worked in the pregame warmups and drills. Dude was one of the most dedicated players I have ever seen. Then....I thought it was selfish he sat out the Sun Bowl the following year. I understood why he did it and it was in his best interest but it wasn't in Stanford's and his coaches and teammates best interest. Yes, there is big difference between playing for a National Championship and a meaningless Bowl game but I do think a lot of players have to seriously consider sitting out games (whatever games they may be) if they are top 10, 20, 30 locks.
I am not against Sparko's idea but I do feel it's not the best way to have the best and most deserving teams play each other.
My biggest issue is how at the beginning of the season teams are basically declared deserving (or not deserving) before they play a single game. That's too arbitrary for me. You need a laugh in terms of pre-season rankings? Freaking Northwestern was #25 in the coaches poll. Northwestern is 2-8 and 0-7 in the Big 10. Minnesota received 1 "other" vote. Minnesota is 9-1 and 6-1 in the Big 10.

Re: 2019 College Football Season
At this point they may as well go back to no championship series and have the AP and coaches decide the champion with a poll. The selection committee is the same as the polls, just a fewer amount of "votes". We will never know whether the undefeated UCF team two years ago was actually the best NCAA team or not. No doubt in my mind Alabama will be in the playoffs.
Re: 2019 College Football Season
Just like with the NCAA tournament selection committee - the NCAA football "voters" are not going to ever get it 100% right. At least not in the eyes of the fans. I do think there is probably a bias in selecting the CFP teams in that popularity and potential tv viewership play a role.
I accept things they way they are right now in both the tournament selection process and the CFP system. What choice do I have?

Re: 2019 College Football Season
It's way better in my opinion but this is one scenario where I think they should expand the playoffs.
8 teams.
NCAA basketball should cut back to 64 or even fewer teams.
I wouldn't mind the NBA cutting to 12 teams and give the top 2 teams from each conference a bye and making the 1st round best of 3.
I like MLB as it is.
MLS should cut way back on playoff teams.

Re: 2019 College Football Season
Should be 8. And this is the most logical I've seen and think it could be perfect.
P5 Champions (Big 12, BIG, SEC, ACC, PAC) They are automatically the top 5 seeds.
2 At Large (Whoever from the rest of the P5 schools)
1 G5 Highest rated in playoff rankings (MWC, American, CUSA, MAC)
First round game at campus site. Highest rated teams host.
Semis at one of the BCS Bowls (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta)
Final at a big NFL Stadium like AT&T, Metlife in NY, Levi's in San Fran, Superdome, Mercedes Benz in ATL, New Rams Stadium in LA, Vegas Raiders Stadium, etc.

Notre Dame, of course, fucks up all the scenarios.
Bad sport, terrible postseason system.

Re: 2019 College Football Season
Newton's idea is kinda what I was thinking.
You'd have no excuse to whine because if you win your conference, you are in, and i'd assume if you were undefeated as a G5, you'd get that last spot.

Notre Dame is an independent so the can be at large team if they qualify
Bad Sport??? #$#@#$!!$&%%&%^^%%&&& What the freak are you talking about
The postseason system is and has been terrible but the possibilities of it becoming a March Madness event is just so cool it has to happen.

Re: 2019 College Football Season
Correct. If you win your conference, you deserve to play for it all, no matter if it's the weak Pac 12.
The 2 at-larges can cover Notre Dame, or in this case an Alabama that can squeeze in as a 6 seed and play on the road against a very good Clemson team or something along those lines.
So for this year playoff field would be as of today...
1. Ohio State
2. LSU
3. Clemson
4. Oregon
5. Oklahoma
6. Alabama At Large
7. Utah At Large
8. Memphis G5
Memphis at Ohio State
Utah at LSU
Bama at Clemson
OU at Oregon
Those would be 4 FANTASTIC matchups.
Obviously Oregon and Utah will play each other in Pac 12 Championship to wipe one of them out more than likely.

Vast majority of games: bad football, bad rules, bad product, and to make sure you haven't had enough, they stretch the games out to be 4-5 hours long. College football is also the incubator for the absolute grossest part of sports culture in this country.hartjack8 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 9:30 amNotre Dame is an independent so the can be at large team if they qualifyCrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 9:01 am Notre Dame, of course, fucks up all the scenarios.

Would be much better if the Power 5 broke off and did their own thing.
Re: Notre Dame, exactly. All of the G5 teams would bitch about Newton's system because Notre Dame would be the representative no less than 70% of the time.

Of course, this works and is the most logical. But, ND will always demand, and get, special treatment when it comes to postseason rules.

Re: 2019 College Football Season
Then the conferences need to make them join a conference to be considered with the P5 or else they need to be a highly rated team and be an at-large.
I mean, they're already a defacto member of the ACC. They are an ACC school in everything but Football.

Except it would be four conferences with 16 teams not 5.
I get you don't like ND. They the original Texas with their own TV deal. I myself have absolutely no problem with ND.
One of the problems causes the other. Due to the nonsensical post season teams lean to play teams that are sure wins. Just look to see who Alabama is playing this week. WTF good is that game doing for the sport in week 13 of the season.
If you have a system where your schedule can haunt you, as in nonconf cupcake land all of a sudden the games all become relevant.

Your going to have to explain this to me.

My guess is "college football is basically indentured servitude" or something.
It's not worth the explanation.

Of course, they would want Notre Dame to be involved (if good enough), but they'd have the power to finally say: play by our rules.

I don't have a big problem with ND, they're just too much of a powerhouse ($$$) for anyone to ignore. They will demand to not be, and really can't be, treated the same way a Military school is or a G5 program is.hartjack8 wrote: ↑Fri Nov 22, 2019 10:14 am Would be much better if the Power 5 broke off and did their own thing.

No sport makes people lose their brains like football, and given the provincial(?) nature of college football programs, it's a perfect breeding ground for absolute greed and terror.
It goes beyond the astronomical amount of money being made by very few people off of football. See Penn State and Ohio State for examples. People losing their minds to protect and worship. Other sports might have aspects of that, but nothing compares to college football.

My man breeding ground for terror you make it sound like isis and the middle east. LOL
Just a little over the top.
ND is a special case. They are the only school which would lose money by joining a conference.
Kudos to a school that dictates its own rules.

Re: 2019 College Football Season
The Big 12 may never win another championship in football. The current round robin represents the toughest schedule for any of the power 5. With Kansas playing better ball, no team will be healthy enough to really compete in two more high stakes games. Parity is lethal. Every game matters alright. So you need to load up on four patsies non-conf and only play a couple of top teams. Like the BiG

OU lost to kansas state.
