Re: Kansas City thread
HI CAN I HELP YOU?????
Re: Kansas City thread
I love their sauce. When I was still living in KC, I always said they have the best fries in town. The last burnt end sammich I had there was inedible.

Gates is so, so hit or miss. For that particular type of Q, LC’s is much better.

LC's is definitely my favorite of that type and probably my favorite BBQ place overall.
Just felt a need to defend Gates as it gets so much heat. Certainly has it's flaws, but,
I love their sauce so much I could drink it.
I love that the fries taste like potatoes fried in oil and nothing else.
I love that most everyone has a memory of going there as a kid.
I love that you can buy a huge mixed plate of BBQ for $23.
I love the looks of absolute terror on tourists' face when they get yelled at as soon as they walk in the door.
I love that you will never find the words "artisan" or "truffle" anywhere close to their menu.
Gates wouldn't win a contest on the tour, and I love that their owners, employees, and loyal customers couldn't give a single shit less.

So why can't they just source some better meat? It's sort of the MAIN POINT.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2019 11:20 am LC's is definitely my favorite of that type and probably my favorite BBQ place overall.

The art may have been lost in the amount of volume, expansion, and turnover. That's a good thing about LC's as LC basically lives there. Gates with obvious QC issues, and quite frankly, the suburbanites nerded the shit out of smoking meat to perfection, which wasn't something that Gates ever promised.
The ham and fries were perfect on Saturday--everything else was overcooked by KCBS standards. Unlimited sauce makes up for it.

You know what's a goddamn travesty, is the Bryant's at the speedway.
Re: Kansas City thread
Yea.
You may even get better BBQ ( Biemer's/Biggs ) in Lawrence than at that Bryant's.

They finally closed it down a few weeks ago. It was doing way worse things for the brand than any money it could make.
AB's also had travesties at Ameristar and MCI that have also closed.

Yeah went there a couple of years ago. Very disappointed in quality, the service and everything else about it.
Convenient location and I'm sure it made them some money, but it was not good.
I was dying laughing earlier this week when Carrington Harrison at 610 shared first time Gates experiences, especially for white people. The panic that white people who are visiting there for the first time when the lady behind the counter yells "HI MAY I HELP YOU!?" is something to watch.
Been to Gates a few times, feel confident ordering there now, but still get a little antsy showing up there.
Still a Joe's guy myself.

I love this post. I grabbed a bunch of Gates sauce on my way outta KC this morning. Nothing better on barbecued chicken .CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Mon Dec 16, 2019 11:20 am LC's is definitely my favorite of that type and probably my favorite BBQ place overall.

I read that it is closing. Famous Dave's was a better choice.

I’m big on value. I had my entire family crammed into my 1,100 sf condo. I fed 9 on $60 of Rosedale this past summer. Everybody got full.
Re: Kansas City thread
I always get the $5.99 nooner at Gates for lunch. Love the burnt end mixed with brisket and more fries than you can actually eat. And yes, the original Gates Classic sauce is the best. I use it on chicken at home all the time.

Another one of my seemingly unpopular KC opinions: I like Minsky’s.

My favorite BBq in KC is a little strip mall spot by Embassy Suites at the airport:
