who ya got?
Re: who ya got?
For all those throwing around the words "socialist" and "socialism" freely and as a pejorative I ask whether they consider it "socialism" that Federal Govt is just giving money to farmers because they may (or may not) be losing money due to the misguided trade policies of the Administration. In the context where the words are used in a pejorative manner I believe that this Administration is practicing "socialism" - satisfying the needs of affected some with resources from another. Are you OK with this "socialist" behavior because it is being done by someone who you support?
Are you willing to outright claim that Medicare and Social Security are "socialist" (they are, using the above definition) and they are to be eliminated? If your candidate won't say that then are you also a "socialist"?
Having said that I don't support Bernie as a candidate even though I support several of his policy goals. I think his proposals are impractical, much the same way Libertarianism or Communism, are and he's misleading young voters, when he really should be working to turn them out to vote. I am especially critical of what he did in the 2016 General Election, and therefore would never support him in a primary. As a Senator I think he is effective; I would grudgingly vote for him in a head-to-head against the Impeached One.

Yes. Voters want normal.
Biden is as close as it gets (or maybe Klobuchar).

No one is throwing the term socialist around as a pejorative. It's IN THE NAME OF THE PARTY HE PURPORTS TO REPRESENT. That's on him, not us.zsn wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 5:30 pm For all those throwing around the words "socialist" and "socialism" freely and as a pejorative I ask whether they consider it "socialism" that Federal Govt is just giving money to farmers because they may (or may not) be losing money due to the misguided trade policies of the Administration. Of course, he's not a socialist. He's an egoist. And he, like Warren, favors taxing the rich AND the poor to give to the middle class.

Oh please, DC, who the hell knows what Bernie actually favors, he talks to hear his head rattle.

Re: who ya got?
He purports to represent the Democratic Party (that's still the name, last time I looked) as he is running in the DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY. He's not running in the Independent Socialist Primary. And, yes, I agree that he is an egotist.
Be that as it may, I don't have the time nor the inclination to search through the threads but there are several here who use (have used) the term pejoratively. To clarify, my first two paragraphs were not about Bernie....just in general what the terms mean to certain people. There are many policies of both parties which are socialist in nature (not-there-is-anything-wrong-with-that).

Have to tell you that I went over to some friends' house to watch Super Bowl last night and was asking them about the difference between racism and prejudice. They're Republicans and one is a professional Republican organizer type and both said, "What difference? There's no difference." One is a millennial who said there is no way, no how, no time to use the N-word. The other is a boomer who talked about members of her father's generation that she used to tell not to use the N-word.lobster wrote: ↑Sun Feb 02, 2020 2:47 pmI know, I probably was just wasting my time. According to her, I'm now a racist, misogynist, and someone who condones Jeffery Epstein's behavior.
I'm just going to throw in the towel with Sea.
We both remembered good friends who moved away from our county because their brother lived across the road and talked about the N-word president and their Gen X daughter said she would no longer be coming to their house if her uncle was there. So they sold to a civil rights lawyer who told his mother when young that if she said the N-word one more time, he'd never set foot in her house again.
But perhaps it's that we live in a less segregated part of the country than all y'all and have different experiences with more diverse communities.

Socialist should always be used pejoratively because it is a failed ideology. People have tried it again and again throughout history and it has never worked. What other way could it be used, other than wishfully for really gullible or naive people?zsn wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 5:30 pm For all those throwing around the words "socialist" and "socialism" freely and as a pejorative I ask whether they consider it "socialism" that Federal Govt is just giving money to farmers because they may (or may not) be losing money due to the misguided trade policies of the Administration. I don’t care for either one. I’m not dumb enough to think the latter will still be around when it’s my turn to use it, anyway.

She won't listen to me, but maybe, she'll listen to you. This is another problem with people nowadays -- they define any word the way they want. This is why we have people screaming "racist" at people who share a different opinion on some topic. Sometimes, I think humans were not ready for the internet and all this technology, as we can't even follow actual meanings of words.TDub wrote: ↑Mon Feb 03, 2020 10:19 pmThere is a difference. I think I now understand why DChawk was mad at me for inviting Sea to the ku.net some years ago. Remember that?

Never said I had trouble getting through my days. I'm fortunate to do what I love doing.
Re: who ya got?
If I understand the Iowa mess right now, they decided to be transparent about every vote, yet didn't change the underlying system that makes it impossible to verify the numbers exactly.
This should have been obvious to anyone that's caucused there. It's a mess and the counts are inexact. But those problems should weigh out in the end.
If they're going to investigate every inconsistency, this will take weeks or more.
