I don't see anything wrong with having our reps go through the same struggles. 80K is actually a pretty damn good salary in DC. Most people are making half that and living with roommates. Another thing to know is that you do not need a car in DC. It's one of the best cities to live in if you don't own one. That will save you at least a thousand or more on insurance, plus car payment if you hadn't paid off your vehicle.
Please be honest, you really don’t have a fucking clue in regards to getting around the DC metro area with or without a car - do you?

I've lived in Nova and worked in DC. Have you?
For short periods of time (days/weeks/a month)? Yes, I have lived in "NOVA".
No, I have not worked in DC.
You're right, you don't need to own a car in DC (or any city) if you have alternative modes of transportation.
I completely disagree that DC is one of the best cities to live in if you don't have a car - or don't use a car service such as a cab/Uber.
Being that you lived in NOVA and worked in DC I assume you are well aware the cab system blows and public transportation isn't terrific either. Do you really disagree?

Good grief. A US Rep cannot just live in whatever random apartment building they find that they like. There are massive security concerns with that.

Come on. I get the point you're trying to make but seriously....
They're normal citizens. They're not a special class of individuals.

If they need housing provided for security then we should provide them housing...the fact we don't leads me to believe that their security isn't at risk depending on where they choose to live. As far as I know there aren't restrictions on where they are required to live, correct?
Do normal citizens have assigned security details? No. They arent normalcitizens. Their unique profession has a bunch of extra stuff that comes with it that a normal citizen making an identical amount of money simply does not have to factor into their day to day lives.

Honestly, what reality do you live in?

There are not many professions where the pinnacle job of the mountain for that profession only makes $80k.

You get what you pay for. Pay dogshit salaries with terrible benefits and you will not like the caliber of individual who is willing to be OK with such compensation. And you certainly wont like them representing you in Congress.

lobster wrote: Mon Feb 10, 2020 3:04 pm Well, I do agree with twocoach that there are increased dangers. It shouldn't be this way, but it is. That's why I suggested the dorm.
I don't remember all the details (and may be confusing some details with another scandal) but wasn't there some Church group or another "renting" rooms to GOP congressmen (yes, men only) for some insanely cheap amount - like $50/mo? This was the place where one Senator (I think Ensign from Nevada) was....er.....schtupping his campaign manager's wife and his "roommate" who was another GOP Senator from another state covered up for Ensign for a long time?

As I recall, neither the Church group nor this other Senator suffered any consequences. So, when you suggest dorms we should think of all the consequences. But I do like the idea of having tax-payer funded secure apartment buildings where congresspeople can "rent" places.
Prayer, Politics and Power: ‘The Family’ Reveals Our Insidious American Theocracy. Based on author Jeff Sharlet’s book of the same name, the Netflix docuseries highlights a secret (homoerotic) Christian cabal that you’ve never heard of

From the Illuminati to the freemasons to QAnon, there’s no shortage of conspiracy theories trying to explain how power is accumulated and shared in Washington, D.C. But the wide-ranging network of politicians, world leaders, and men of faith that make up the Fellowship isn’t mere conspiracy theory: it’s 100 percent true. What’s more, some of its members are speaking on the record about it for the first time in the new five-part Netflix series The Family, directed by documentarian Jesse Moss.

Generally, you get paid if you cost less than what you make for a company. Of course, this doesn't apply to government and many other jobs that are not in the market. No way in hell AOC (or many of these men in government too) would make 174K in the market.

Dude, nobody said they didn't have extra job duties. But stop acting like 99% of politicians (there's a lot at state and national level) aren't walking around like normal citizens going to grocery stores and movies theatres etc. The few that need extra security get it. Their extra job duties don't require them to be paid more than they're worth so that they can live a life of luxury never leaving a gated community. I never said pay them minimum wage. I only said they're overpaid. Which they are (or at least most of them).

Don't know what level of security congressional types require, but coming across my husband's concealed carry permit this week reminded me that even "ordinary elected officials" have security concerns that RO (aka Illinois) isn't aware of. Would imagine that in an era of Trump deliberately riling up folks with violent talk, those security concerns are even greater.
