Where's the petri dish thread?
Re: Where's the petri dish thread?
I have three kids in three different schools. Anyone who has observed kids’ hand washing habits understands why I have resigned myself to being exposed.

Fortunately, with my current job I can do anything I need to from anywhere.
That wasn't the case when I was still cooking for a living. There were no sick days. Suck it up and work. In 25+ years, I stayed home twice and was worrying about getting fired for that.

Defense. Rebounds.

Yeah, in so many industries, it’s the effective norm and culture to not miss any work, even when there’s lip service otherwise.
I remember my last food service job, I called in sick (for the first time at any job in years) cuz I was puking and pooping and had all the symptoms of a food borne illness.
I’m laying on the floor of the bathroom when my manager calls back and bitches me out. I send him a selfie of my head on the seat of a toilet bowl full of puke, and he calls me a liar. He says I better have a doctor’s note, and I said at the moment I can’t afford to go to the doctor. He says I’m lying again.
I came back into work and he spent the next week chastising me about it. I asked whether there was a policy or law regarding food borne illness symptoms and food service workers, and he says there is, but it doesn’t apply to liars.

Its not much different in the construction industry. Im guilty of it both from the employee side and the boss side. But, you get people that just completely abuse it otherwise amd call in sick every fucking week or everytime theyre hungover etc.
Just Ledoux it

I have a lot of sympathy for the self-employed/small business service industry. Hair stylists, massage therapists, etc.
People don't want to be touched, so business halts. The people that do come in, well, you have to touch them and there is a virus going around. Or, you can choose not to work and not make any money for a solid quarter of the year (or more).

My calendar alerted me this morning that I have a dental appointment next week. I know hygienists have the highest rate of illness/sick days of almost any profession. Who the fuck is gonna want to clean teeth (or have their teeth cleaned) if this develops into a full-blown pandemic with a 2% death rate?

Sorry, I don't understand your objection to this, other than perhaps as a case of political correctness? I don't ascribe this to PC - there have been many reports of children who are of Chinese descent being bullied in school. I thought that this is reasonable advice.
Also, I heard an English professor yesterday on NPR's Marketplace talking about the language used in describing aspects of this epidemic. She was talking about the need to be careful with words used for precisely this reason. One example she gave was if people are generally calm and they get a message from the authorities to remain calm suddenly everyone things "Why are they asking me to be calm? Should I be worried about something?"

oh wonderful... now there are apparently two separate strains. a L and a S. Good luck with a quick (1-2 year) vaccine.

Well, for starters, that was almost seven hours ago.jeepinjayhawk wrote: ↑Wed Mar 04, 2020 7:40 pmYou are red-lining your twattage tonight.
Are you ok?
Additionally, it's just a case where the more you post, the more I realize how little you have to say.

Sorry for the interruption.
Unfortunately it's looking like there is a slight but legitimate possibility for us to kiss the 2020 NCAA Tournament goodbye.
Outbreaks in Washington, California, etc. being huge factors that are currently being discussed.
