Good lord, Illy. I have made no attempt to say that it is acceptable. Your reading comprehension is simply terrible.

It's not dumb to ask people to accept the risks of their chosen profession and perform their job even in this situation.
It is not dumb to expect them to do their important jobs. Our country needs them to even though it sucks they are being forced to.
And it is not acceptable that the President is doing this to them.
Two separate things.
It is dumb to expect them to do their jobs with the possibility of no pay. It's a reality but it is dumb as shit.

A janitor at the White House? Yes.
A Border Patrol agent? No.
Some jobs are important to our nation running properly so we should all expect those jobs to be done. And there very little possibility of "no pay". It will delayed but they will be paid.
And yes, it is dumb as shit that the this is happening, especially since it would have been avoided if Trump wasn't scared of Anne Coulter's impact on his reelection campaign.

You have no idea if they will be paid or not. You assume they will and we all know the saying. There have already been enough tweets and suggestions from the right whackjobs that started this suggesting not to pay --- Expecting people to work for free is dumb

Congress and the White House decide whether they get back pay. It would be political suicide for them to announce that they were deciding not to pay them. Trump will not do that heading into an already shaky re-election campaign.
So based on that and the fact that I have not yet found any evidence that any other govt shut down resulted in workers not getting paid, I feel confident that they will get paid eventually.

Mich simply cannot concede when he has taken the "L." It's one thing to joke about how a shutdown is what this country needs because government is too big (which I have done in this thread). It's something else altogether to insist that you're not joking and that your ideology necessitates that you enjoy people suffering to make a point.
That's the conservative dilemma these days. We had a choice between the Nice-ish but hopelessly ineffective establishment Republicans and the mean but (presumably) effective Trump-esque Republicans.
What we've ended up with, though, is meanness without effectiveness. Just plain spite.
Also, the gov't is too big argument rings kinda hollow when the reason for the shutdown is an enormously wasteful, expensive project in the first place.
If the stalemate was over something important instead of a dumb wall, it might be different.

Like Bush (43) before him, Trump is the classic Tax-Cut-and-Spend Republican.

Works great for a short run. Maybe just long enough to get re-elected.
Of course, it takes about 6-7 years for the real financial impact to turn the cart over.
W got 7.7 years with very few creases.

Perhaps Trump is just trying to put in place the kind of barter economy that Psych constantly suggested that we should return to. First, kick out the carpenters, painters, other workers out of the country and then suggest that Federal employees take their place at those kinds of jobs.

I never understood that barter economy idea. That is so 19th/early 20th century, before advancements like antibiotics. No doctor would accept a live chicken as payment for treatment.

The shutdown happened because our elected officials have nothing meaningful to offer. The shutdown is lingering because our elected officials have nothing meaningful to offer. As long as they have nothing meaningful to offer they can keep it shutdown.

Gosh, it's so simple for you, isn't it?
Disruptive, disappointing, chaotic: Shutdown upends scientific research
In research labs and field sites across the world, the week-long government shutdown has ground scientific progress to a halt. Thousands of scientists are among the hundreds of thousands of federal employees and contractors who must stay at home without pay. The furlough will probably persist into the new year, which would mean a rocky start to 2019 for American science.
The partial shutdown, caused by President Trump’s rejection of a bipartisan spending deal that not allocate billions of dollars for a U.S.-Mexico border wall, curtailed scientific operations at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the Agriculture Department, the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Geological Survey. Furloughed government scientists are prohibited from checking on experiments, performing observations, collecting data, conducting tests or sharing their results.
If the budget impasse extends into the new year, scientists say, it will harm critical research.
“Any shutdown of the federal government can disrupt or delay research projects, lead to uncertainty over new research, and reduce researcher access to agency data and infrastructure. . . . Continuing resolutions and short-term extensions are no way to run a government,” said Rush Holt, chief executive of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, in a statement.
Alice Harding, an astrophysicist at Goddard Space Flight Center who is among the roughly 15,000 furloughed NASA employees, worries about missing rare astronomical phenomena — starbursts proceed with or without a federal budget. Just days before the government closed, she and her colleagues at the Fermi space telescope observed a pulsar flashing in an unprecedented way. She scrambled to get a follow-up observation using NASA’s NICER instrument in her last days at work.
...Crucial research windows will slam shut on Earth, too. A crop-eating pest called the brown marmorated stink bug emerges only in the spring. Scientists must prepare for the insects' annual debut, and missing it would set researchers back an entire year, the Entomological Society of America warned. “A lot of incredible science happens in our government every day,” said Robert K.D. Peterson, the organization’s president, in a statement. “But when the government shuts down, even partially, that work is derailed.”

I doubt any of that bothers the GOP, the party of science deniers.
Besides, Trump knows everything better than any experts. If these scientists want to know how something works, they can just hit him up on twitter and ask him.

It is that easy actually. All they have to do is put the folks first and get to work. The rest of us do it everyday.

It is not "they." It is "he," the head of the executive branch. He will never get the wall. He needs to compromise, not "they." Jimmy Carter made the same mistake.

It's they. They have been phiddlephucqueing around the phiddlephucque pole for years and years now. They are both equally to blame. I know this because I am an adult.
Inability and unwillingness to get the job done has been plagueing our elected officials since the beginning of the 21st century. I remember back when our government used to work for the people.
All of them are to blame. I know this because I am an adult.
