Another whole level of bullshit allowing 4 years of eligibility for JUCO transfers.

College sports is getting closer to off my radar.

That will leave zero sports on my ‘must follow’ screen.

same.

For a person who sports consumed huge chunks of my life..... I'm on the verge of only being a casual follower, headline only type of fan (this is pretty much already true except college bball already) This is weird.

Bill Self's results at Kansas with the preseason #1 team:

2004-05: Kansas, 23-7, No. 3 seed, lost to No. 14 Bucknell in the First Round
2009-10: Kansas, 33-3, No. 1 seed, lost to No. 9 Northern Iowa in the Second Round
2018-19 Kansas, 26-10, No. 4 seed, lost to No. 5 Auburn in the Second Round
2023-24 Kansas, 23-11, lost to No. 5 Gonzaga in the Second Round

He has NEVER made it out of the first weekend with the preseason #1 team and this year doesn't look like it's going to be any different. That's insane.

That's insane. Thanks for looking that up.

I blame some of it on the fact that I think the media sucks at most preseason polls. So don't get me started on most CoY awards being the ability to do better than picked in a preseason poll...

But still, a few times is an odd coincidence. This many times without exception is starting to get weird.

I feel like we'd already discussed Self's history with preseason #1s in the offseason, right around the same time we fans were discussing whether this lineup warranted a preseason #1 either way.

The narrative was something like, Hunter/KJ/Dajuan was a solid enough core that just needed a better supporting cast; some upgrade from the McCullar/Elmarko/Furphy/Justin Timberlake rotation, and that maybe Storr/Griffen/Zeke/Diggy/Shaq could be that upgrade.

Or maybe the narrative was more like, whether Hunter/KJ/Dajuan was a solid enough core either way, and whether any supporting cast could justify doubling down.

There was also talk that Storr and/or Griffen might put up a draft-worthy campaign this season, but alas.

I dunno.

I'd be curious what the preseason #1 team has done for each season since 2000ish.

Has to be some bad results between us and some of those UK teams.

We had no business in that preseason 1 spot.
That's the failure of the AP.

Probably not.

But, did Duke deserve it? Probably not either.

Preseason rankings are even more difficult now that the roster turnover is nearly 50% every single year.

"What did you see from AJ and Rylan?"

"Nothing."

Then singles AJ out for shitty ball screen defense. The thing that was giving up the open layups.

"We don't have guys that can get their shoulder past guys one on one without help".

“The thing that bothers me more than anything is why?” Self said of the sub-par KU effort, which included the Jayhawks scoring just 20 points in the first half and falling behind by 15 after 10 minutes.

“No energy. No enthusiasm. Little personality, if any,” Self said. “No sense of urgency when we are playing the first game of the conference season, and everybody knows intensity will be ramped up and we are playing a team responsible for creating a negative start to our conference season last year and they kicked our butt (in Morgantown, 91-85, in the fifth game of the 2023-24 conference season).

“How can you not be ramped up? With the students not there there’s still not an empty seat in the house. That to me is a situation … that stuff bothers me. It is ‘Why, why?’’’

Self said the Jayhawks, who are 9-3 this season, had held great practices since returning from Christmas vacation.

“You preach your team to be tough. I’m not sure ‘message received,’ or is it being delivered in a proper way?” Self said. “I do think there are some things from a teaching standpoint and a player standpoint we need to definitely be a lot better than what we were and maybe different methods to put us in position to be better than what we were because, ‘Message (is) not being received.’
...
“I could list energy, enthusiasm, leadership, poise, toughness, trust, attention to detail. I could list a lot of things I think would be important to us winning,” Self said.

it'd be one thing if this team was young.

But this team is led by 4th-5th-6th year seniors.

I think the issue is that it's not a "team", it is a group of guys that play basketball together. It's not led by anyone because it doesn't just come in and happen like that overnight.

DH KJ and HD have chemistry. Elmarko and Jamari would have had that also in my opinion due to their experience together and at KU. Those 5 feel like a team to me.

Zeke is fitting in. Bidunga is fitting in, even if in a lesser role than he desired coming in.

Storr Griffen Coit Moore are all 1st year players at KU and 1 year mercenaries here for the money and NBA tryout. They're all very likely unhappy with their roles and output. Maybe Coit isn't. He sort of knew what he was getting into.

Either way, I think it's easy to see why some of these guys have low energy. Storr has ran from every situation he's ever been in. Never been coached long term. Never built chemistry with a team long term.

Griffen left a national title contender. He's didn't come here with the main goal being to chase a natty, he could have done that at Bama on what appears to be a better team. He came here for money and because he felt there was a bigger opportunity for minutes/shots than at Bama for his NBA tryout season.

Moore expected to be the backup PG. Not to play 5.6mpg.

It's another piss poor 1 year building job where we hit on Bidunga Zeke and Coit (being generous with Coit), and missed (so far) on Moore Storr and Griffen.

We also missed on KJ developing some sort of jumper and/or Clemence becoming playable at the 4.

A lot of missing there.

We needed that 4th big.

And Clemence, in theory (if he can ever hit some shots in actual games), fits well with both HD and Bidunga. Whereas KJ fits well with neither.

The most disappointing part is Clemence had an entire sit out year to improve and he seems to be the same player or only marginally improved.
