Another glowing review for Smokin’ Yards in Idaho Springs.

Brisket, ribs, southern style green beans, plus fries. All perfectly cooked and fresh and flavorful and delish. Don’t even need sauce, but their “swine bitin’ bold” is the best. I use it mostly on the fries n lieu of ketchup.

And not that I come here so often I’m a VIP by now, buuut the chick at the counter recognized me, and I also got more ribs on the combo plate than the rest of yall.

Sounds delicious. Florida BBQ doesn't compare to KCs.

Ha, hadn't heard that one, but I'm definitely stealing it.

Yea.

We all had that one friend who studied abroad, right?

And not just studied abroad but kind of made it their entire personality for a while.

You sit down to lunch one day, and they’re acting all uppitymayo about it all of a sudden.

What is it, friend?

*sighs wistfully* this just isn’t the same as the mayo I had in Barthelona…

That's what it has become. Traditionally, it is garlic and salt ground in a morter and pestle with the addition of olive oil.

welp.

finally tried Buc-ees. AKA the Bass Pro Shop of gas stations.

It has like 200 gas pumps, which I guess is nice. Then has a giant gift shop selling everything from holiday sweaters to "Live Laugh Love" wall art.

Pretty heavy on the down-home snacks, too. Candied nuts, jerky, grab-n-go servings of "pie parfait" looking things that 10yo me would have been obsessed with but not any more. Plus an enormous truck stop's worth of the usual truck stop snacks.

But I went straight for the good stuff: BBQ!!! And gas station BBQ at that!!!

Tried a brisket sammich...actually not bad! The meat itself was tender, juicy, not super smoky flavor but still flavorful, not dry or chewy at all. The sauce they put on was a little tangy, but way too sweet, might as well have been straight molasses, kind of ruined it.

Overall it was good enough to tempt me to go in and try the turkey or pulled pork or sausage too, but figure one sammich was enough for lunch. Oh, it was a generous portion too, with sliced brisket piled on.

No real bbq sides to go with. I was hoping for some tater salad or Cole Aldrich slaw or something, but all they really had was sweet stuff or truck stop chips and stuff, meh don't need it.

The ambience sucked tho, even by gas station standards. Nowhere to really sit down. And the sammiches are basically grab-and-go, where you just walk up and grab one wrapped in foil sitting under a heat lamp. They have like 6 dozen of each sammich just sitting there waiting to be grabbed.

That's nice for the sake of convenience and no wait time, but here's the thing: being the Bass Pro of gas stations, the place is just crawling with y'all tourists. And y'all tourists being tourists, y'all wouldn't believe how many folks would just go up there and stand in front of these giant trays of foil-wrapped sammiches, and just stand there, and stand there, and stand there, staring in some sort of stupefied amazement, as if it's a giant aquarium full of largemouth bass or something.

WTF is there to look at?? Why not go stare at the pie parfaits, they're at least all colorful and covered in whipped cream and berries and such. Or go stare at the Live Laugh Love wall art, there's one that also has a bedazzled American flag design to it too, so sparkly and patriotic.

Wherever you gotta stand and stare, go do it somewhere else, and get outta the way so I can grab me a sammich y'all!

Mrs. 99 and I went to one in Richmond, KY. Huge, and no trucks (semis) allowed.
They have a giant wall of jerky. We got a couple packs, not that great.
I got the brisket sammich. It was chopped, sliced was not an option. Tourists were around watching dudes chop brisket, kudos for serving it fresh.
They had a Mexican food stand that we did not try. Looked ok.

I got my chopped brisket sammich and asked if they had any tables to sit down and eat it. Nope was the answer. Ate it in the car which is not optimal. It was OK, as good as any 'cue I've had in KY. Sad by KC standards.

after thinking about it, maybe staring down the sammich trays is actually the move.

Stand there and wait for the fresh ones to come out.

Y'all are like a kitty cat waiting for the automatic feeder to drop the kibbles.
