DC travel recommendations for a trip with middle- and high-school-age kids? Maybe things a level below the obvious (major museums and monuments etc.).

i went to a medical museum when i visited in jr. high…it was awesome (and an optional side trip for those in our group)
still recall seeing the human hairball that was so massive it had confirmed to the sale of the stomach. the girl from which it was removed was a chronic, nervous hair “chewer”

It might not be obvious, only because it’s not in DC…but Gettysburg is close and definitely worth a visit for everyone.
Great Falls is incredible. If they are in shape (and you), renting bikes and hitting rock creek park is great.
I’ve said this in a few threads, but the monuments are way better at night.
The Cathedral also often missed. It’s also better at night (for pictures, the inside is open during day).
Lots and lots to do, of course. And mostly paid for by taxpayers of America.

Thanks. Doing Gettysburg separately. Specifically looking to fill 2-3 days in DC itself.

And I’d you get off the Metro at Woodley Park Station, you can go up the third largest escalator in the US. (Wheaton has longest).
These are teenage girls though. There is a great apple store in Crystal City (or there was last I knew)

Harper’s Ferry is great but not DC proper. Williamsburg equally and the same.
Some more of my faves, that I think might be that age friendly.
Renting paddle boats at the Tidal Basin
Walking Georgetown and area
Navy Yards. Do your own research on what might be enjoyable for your group there. It’s amazing how they’ve transformed what 15 years ago was a mostly neglected area into a thriving district.
And it’s a museum, but they might be just the right age for the holocaust museum.

I like just walking along the creek, and randomly popping off the trail. It's so peaceful and naturey and suddenly you're back in the city.

In a couple weeks, I’ve got to get from NYC to Baltimore on a Sunday.
Plane, train or automobile?
Costs are about a wash.

Plane or train would be my choices. I don’t know where station is in Baltimore though. I fly into BWI half the time I go out there. My buddy lives close to the ICC, and it’s a quick drive from his house in Montgomery County.

You’re hitting on the tough part. I’ll have to pick up my kid at BWI, and then we’ll need a car. So if I take the train, I’ll need to Uber to the airport and go rent a car anyway.
But a train sure seems like the most fun. See some new things, have no paying-attention responsibilities, etc.

Looks like about 20 minutes. But it also appears I can take another train all the way into the airport.
It’s also immaterially cheaper to fly than take the train. What a stupid country.
