Because they spent the money to develop it and they own it and they are a for-profit corporation.

I didn't say it was the choice I personally would make if I was the owner of the company. I would choose to make it available if I had the ability to. But based on the historical decisions made by pharmaceutical companies in valuing private profits more than world health, I would not be surprised if they chose not to. Frankly, I'd be more surprised if they did.

I just took umbrage in your "we" like it was a decision that we as a country or entity had any part of. It isn't owned by any "we" that I am a part of or "the global poor" like these companies could just hand over the formula for these vaccines to groups of poor people on the streets of a third world nation or something.

It was worded as a philosophical question seeking real world answers. Sure "we" would.

(And yet, I wonder how much of the money they spent to develop it was publicly funded.)

I don’t mean to single you out. But it’s just wild how we collectively see such little greater good in anything cuz we’re so busy prioritizing individual gain.

13 drugmakers contracted by Operation Warp Speed in 2020

AstraZeneca — In May, AstraZeneca signed a contract for $1.2 billion to boost access to its COVID-19 vaccine. In October, the drugmaker signed a second contract for $486 million for the U.S. to secure 100,000 doses of its experimental COVID-19 antibody drug and support clinical trials for the drug.

Cytiva — The Massachusetts drugmaker signed a contract in October for $31 million to scale up production of materials needed to produce COVID-19 vaccines, such as liquid and dry powder cell culture media, cell culture buffers, bioreactors and mixer bags.

Eli Lilly — In October, Eli Lilly signed a $375 million contract to supply 300,000 vials of its COVID-19 antibody drug, which was granted emergency authorization by the FDA in November. In early December, the drugmaker signed another $812.5 million contract to supply 650,00 more doses of the drug.

Emergent BioSolutions — In June, Emergent BioSolutions signed a $628 million contract to ramp up its contract development and manufacturing capabilities to expedite the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines.

Fujifilm — In July, Fujifilm signed a $265 million contract to manufacture COVID-19 vaccines.

Johnson & Johnson — In August, Johnson & Johnson signed a more than $1 billion contract to supply the U.S. with 100 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine if it is authorized.

Moderna — In August, Moderna signed a $1.5 billion contract to supply the U.S. with 100 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine, if it is authorized.

Novavax — In July, Novavax signed a $1.6 billion contract to supply the U.S. with 100 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine, if it is authorized.

Pfizer & BioNTech — In July, Pfizer and BioNTech partnered to sign a $1.95 billion contract to supply up to 600 million doses of its COVID-19 vaccine. Under the contract, the U.S. would receive 100 million doses of the vaccine with the opportunity to secure 500 million more doses, but the U.S. did not secure the additional doses.

Regeneron — In July, Regeneron signed a $450 million contract to manufacture thousands of doses of its COVID-19 antibody cocktail, which was granted emergency authorization in November.

Sanofi & GlaxoSmithKline — In July, Sanofi and GlaxoSmithKline partnered to sign a $2.1 billion contract for development of the drugmaker's COVID-19 vaccine as well as an initial supply of 100 million doses...

if my math is correct, that's ~$10.385 billion just from Operation Warp Speed

and i’ll say again - it really means jack shit if the “recipe” is given out freely if countries don’t have the capacity or know-how to do anything with it

sounds like Pfizer is at least trying to do something (selling doses at or below cost to the US for donation to poorer countries), but Moderna won’t even enter into talks with the WHO or Biden admin about licensure of their technology or providing doses at reduced rates

That is a bummer, hope you and fish feel better soon. I get my booster shot tomorrow, but with this Omicron variant, not sure it matters. I feel this is never going away and new variants are going to continue to pop up. I still wear a mask when venturing to the grocery, pet or liquor store (bout the only places I go anymore)…lol. This is just going to be a new way of life for a long, long time.

Actually there is a mechanism for governments to get third parties to manufacture products under patent, especially pharmaceuticals, called Compulsory Licensing, without the threat of infringement. This law has been invoked many times recently the most famous being the government of South Africa on GlaxoSmithKline for AZT, to treat AIDS. It’s not like the innovator gets nothing - they get a predetermined licensing fee, usually a lot lower than they would get in a “partnership deal”. It’s this threat that makes them do things like provide vaccine for poorer countries.

In the AZT model, the government of SA told an Indian manufacturer that they would be immune from prosecution for patent infringement if they set up a manufacturing plant in SA and supplied African nations. Know how and capacity exists to produce the vaccines elsewhere. In fact most of the Astra Zeneca vaccines are produced in India

so in a small sample size of this board. Myself, fish and Newton have gotten it, all after 2 shots

breakthroughs seem to be not as rare as we were told.

Worth noting, though, that I'm typing this post from home, having not missed a day of work. And I'll be alive in a month.
