<sarcasm>An example of the media clearly being in cahoots with Big Pharma to shine light on a report that Omicron might be more of a nuisance than a serious threat. Clearly attempting to whip us into a frenzy by reporting that there are some positive glimmers of hope out there...</sarcasm>

Precisely my point. Why be in a hurry the last two weeks to trot out headlines about a new, possibly more virulent strain, not to mention deviating from labeling it with a letter of the Greek alphabet and assigning a scary name like Omicron?
Why not, instead, sit on the information until more is known so that people can receive correct information in a responsible manner?
Answer: It's a clickbait game wherein news agencies compete to see who can be more sensationalistic than the next and get people to follow their links. It's also
a fear game designed to make us spend our money in ways that are not really necessary.
Ah yes, those free-market-loving, uber-capitalist liberal tricksters are at it again!
And do I detect a suggestion that you should be able to tell people how to spend their money?

The actual answer is that news sites report news on important topics as it happens. You are simply choosing to jam it into your chosen conspiracy. Do news agencies sensationalize things? Yes, but in an effort to put eyeballs on their content instead of the competition.
And I have not spent one penny any different since the announcement of Omicron, which by the way is the 15th letter of the Greek alphabet.

nbc labeled it "breaking news." they didn't know why. they didn't know what. they didn't know anything. they didn't tell us anything. they just rolled out the scary graphics and scary music and had lester holt put on his scary face to tell us nothing.
they heard the folks were planning on enjoying the holiday season. they didn't like that.
My Thanksgiving holiday was exactly the same as prior to covid.

Me too, except I had to make phone calls a few days later informing people I'd vectored Covid at them!

If Omicron turned out to be more virulent than Delta, and the WHO/CDC, news media, etc. sat on it for two weeks waiting while it was transmitted around the world without saying anything. These same idiots would be losing their minds. "How can Biden not let people know!" "Why weren't measures taken!" "They knew about this for two weeks and said NOTHING!"
I'm sure there are examples of overly-alarmist media out there or whatever, but the vast majority of what I saw reported initially was:
A) There's a new variant with a lot more mutations than other strains, a majority of them in the spike protein, and it's sequence looks very unusual. All of this is TRUE.
B) It's not yet known how infectious this variant is, but, preliminary data suggests it's likely contagious.
This is also TRUE
C) It's not yet known how virulent this variant is, but preliminary data suggest it might by milder. This is not yet confirmed, but it looks at least to not have an increase in virulence
D)It's not yet known if it evades immunity, but because of the number of mutations specifically in the spike protein there is some concern. Seems like the vaccines will offer some protection, but likely diminished still not sure exactly how much, it appears previous infected individuals seem fairly susceptible.
Nothing in there is overly alarmist. In fact, most of what I read/saw was appropriately cautious about everything.

So scary:
“‘Nu’ is too easily confounded with ‘new,’” Tarik Jasarevic, a W.H.O. spokesman, said on Saturday. “And ‘Xi’ was not used because it is a common last name.”
He added that the agency’s best practices for naming diseases suggest avoiding “causing offense to any cultural, social, national, regional, professional or ethnic groups.”

I know you won't understand this, but I'm going to post it anyway.
There is a reason that this variant warranted more concern than some of the other variants that we don't hear about. The difference in sequence was much more than other variants and it had a different origin.
This phylogenetic tree shows just how different Omicron is:
Differences don't mean better or worse in and of themselves, but certainly was unusual and in need of further investigation. Not sure why you would want this information to be withheld from the public.
But just because you don't understand something, or the timing is inconvenient for you, doesn't meant there is a conspiracy behind this trying to steal your fun.
I wish you trolls would educate yourselves instead of spreading misinformation.

Opticalillusionsmokethecronic virus in Chicago.
Buddy sent me a text saying his friend's fiancé works in a hospital on the north side and said it's starting to look like last year again - and they are all vaccinated too.
My guess is both are extremes and it's not as bad as last year at this time and they are not "all" vaccinated but....
I'm not going to get paranoid but I think it's time for me to stop being as lax as I have been. Not for my sake so much as my mother's.

The hospital where Mrs 99 works put out a statement today. Cases and hospitalization are rising. 20% in the hospital are vaccinated. 100% in the UCU are unvaccinated.
