It's still not some brand new practice. People were already saying fuck it, lets go 80. Increasing the speed limit isn't all of a sudden making this a potential issue.

NIL is actually a benefit to the player. Will it stop people from going 80? No, but it gives them an alternate route so they don't have feel the need to go 80.

Complaining about shady recruiting is completely irrelevant to what the NCAA is passing. It's not going to stop it, but it's also not going to open the flood gates to where all hell breaks loose like you seem to imply.

On the balance, yes, N/I/L would tend to keep players in school longer. If compensation was competitive with (or better than) G League, I'd think playing in Allen or Rupp or Cameron, on national TV every night, would be more desirable (again, on the balance) than playing in Fort Wayne, on NBATV (maybe).

Absolutely. Been arguing this for a long time. So many guys leaving when they would rather not or aren't ready. Moving to a foreign country alone is not for everyone.

When I was a growing up, I fell in love with KUBB watching Rex Walters, Jacque Vaughn, Paul Pierce, Raef LaFrentz, etc., not because they were extremely talented awesome players that crushed opposing teams' souls, but because in my pre-teen mind, I knew they were playing for the purity of the sport and not for their graduation gifts from KU boosters or the 3rd party money they were getting under the table.

I don't know what Dot's specific background is. I know he went to a pretty fancy private school in North Carolina, but that's not dispositive.

But holy fucking shit does your statement reek of privilege and detachment from reality.

For a lot of these players' families, they ARE the non-minimum-wage income. Saying there's no place in college basketball for poor kids who are unwilling to stay poor for longer is outrageously callous and classist.

The NCAA is a dirty cop who lets habitual offenders off the hook because of community influence. Meanwhile they pull KU over for trying to keep up with traffic. They keep their lights on past 20 other speeders to stop KU. Then they suspect there is weed in the trunk. And maybe the seatbelts weren’t really on. And when is the last time you had this thing inspected? And why is Snacks driving such a nice car? Then they beat the crap out him for resisting arrest. And start ranting about how they know Self doesn’t deserve the things he earned as they take the metaphor to jail and hold a press conference. And ratface tells the AP that he knew KU was speeding because they were scaring recruits in his hybrid.

The money can't be a benefit? It has to be the reason? Once money is in play, do you think players just stop caring? Competitive human nature just goes away. I'd be willing to bet 95+% of players in high major athletics and into the pros fell in love with their respective sports long before they realized how much money was involved. I grew up loving guys like MJ and Shawn Kemp. Had no idea they were making millions.

When a kid is asked what they want to be when the grow up, have you ever noticed it's always NBA player, NFL player, MLB player, etc. Never "doesn't matter as long as I get a multi million dollar contract". That's the purity you're wanting. It just so happens that as these kids grow up, and like ESPN felt the need to make so open during the NFL draft, some of them are in situations where their families may need some money. Now, instead of dropping out of school and hoping to latch on to a professional team, they can get some money while staying in school.

Believe it or not, it is possible to play for both money and sport.
