Alone, although I still have some doubts about it actually being what they describe, as in, totally alone with just the conditions, is still very watchable season after season.

Rooting for Maine girl and Death Metal fashioned eagle bone nose ring Biko.

there’s a new iteration premiering in August…Alone - Frozen

(or something like that)

features a half dozen former participants. looks like they get dropped off in the winter, with no time to prep before confronting weather

this current season is just ok, imo

spoiler alert:

one dude lost a beaver he shot, and another seemingly killed a weasel unnecessarily (imo)

they’re on the Labrador coast though, so it’s definitely a different experience

also, only fly-fishing and dip netting are permitted

one cool thing on this season that i haven’t seen before was one of the contestants dying their hair a half dozen different colors

they then snipped off portions to make flies…pretty ingenious

that's pretty clever.

I've heard stories of fly fisher types who bring a portable tying vise and materials in a pack. They get to the river, figure out what bugs are hatching, then tie up a half dozen to fish with accordingly.

Also heard at least one story of a dude who ties a few familiar generic patterns and sizes, but in all-white, and brings a pack of sharpies with. When he figures out the bug of the day, he colors up the flies accordingly.

We watched this the last couple of nights. It is additive to the book by the same name so while you might some rehashing of material if you read the book, there is new stuff in this as well.

I dunno whether to ask to discuss, or to rewatch it asap.

I like Alone, but also struggle to really embrace it, for the same reasons I struggle to embrace most reality TV.

I find it can be light on actual narratives that describe the practical measures each contestant is taking to survive, and too heavy on overdramatizing some quirky little happening for the sake of TV sensationalism.

oohhh, the guy saw a critter! *cue tense music*

...wait, can we go back to him just explaining how he's building his shelter and what advantages it affords? Or what he's doing to find and purify water? Or how he's trying to store food? fuck it, cue to yet another Hallmark TV sobfest about how much he misses his wife.

I disagree.
I think there is plenty of them describing their shelters and advantages and food storage.
I also think the sobfests are just examples of one of the larger challenges of being Alone.

As far as seeing a critter - this last season, with grizzlies - i'm pretty sure the music is warranted.
If I was alone, in a make shift shelter, and I spotted a grizzly, even if it was across the entire lake, i'd be pretty terrified.
