I watched the 2008 national championship game today. Good golly our bigs were some kind of 3-headed monster! Arthur, Jackson, Kaun, and a little bit of Aldrich. And every guard would drive the lane! A zillion points in the paint. A thing of beauty. I also had forgotten how often Self used to change up the defenses.

Not a panic move...trading 1 non-Conf half season (some of which he was injured and unable to play) for a better chance at 15th and better post-season performance. Damn fine coaching!

if he brings even a somewhat credible threat offensively, this is worthwhile

Self knows best, right?

And the only reason he’d burn a shirt is cuz he thinks a guy can contribute?

And he’s totally not doing it as some knee jerk that’ll mostly be mop up minutes and DNPs

...right?!

So excited for Agbaji. Bold move, Coach. We'll see how it works out. He was fun to watch in the exhibition season. Maybe we'll complete our first alley oop on the season.

God, now that I read my smart ass comment, is it a smart ass comment? Have we had one? Anyways, fingers crossed for Agbaji. I am a big fan of the young man.

Obviously this was exhibition only but he shot 3 for 3 from 3 in those 2 games. That’s gotta be something right?

But honestly, I think he’ll be used as a guy to drive the lane and use athleticism to get points. When Vick is going through motions, I think Ochai will be the first guy off the bench here in a couple of weeks. He’ll get 10-15 minutes per night and get you 6 points and 5 rebounds per game.

Lots of conversations in this thread.

1. I didnt attend KU. I'm the only one in my family that didnt. Circumstabces were such that i couldn't. I grew up in Kansas living and breathing Kansas basketball. Explosions of joy, heartbreaking devastating losses. Broken plates, holes in walls, noone used to want to watch games with me etc. Anyone that tells me i cant use we and our, or that im less of a fan than a kid from pennsylvania that decides to go to kansas and majors in computer science but likes basketball and attends some games can fuck right the fuck off.

2. Ochai. Go gettem kid. It seems a little desperate but might just be the spark we need. Love it. Dunk on them Och and keep vicks head screwed on.

After what the NCAA did to Preston, thinking Silvio might play this year is just wishful thinking.

CJ Moore mentioned last night that a scout who attended a preseason practice noticed how Ochai was the best shooter from the guards that he saw. Still, Self could afford to sit him to start because the plan was to play 2 bigs, so he didn't need to burn his year since he wouldn't play much in a 3 guard system. Well, now that it's a 4-guard offense, he has to play and provide something that KJ Lawson can't. And that's athleticism and shooting.

Bringing in Agbaji also gives Self the ability to bench Vick without feeling like he is dooming the game. I think Self gave Vick the criteria for which his return would be acceptable and we are starting to see Vick fail to live up to them.

This move allows Self to punish Vick for being boneheaded and disengaged without punishing the whole team. Agbaji is going to bust his ass in every second he is out there; it has been a consistent trait of his in everything he does from what I have heard.

That’s a good point about Vick insurance.

The timing of that makes more sense than, our starting center is out so let’s call up a wing.

I think it's more about playing 4 out 1 in instead of 3 out and 2 in. In terms of depth, I'd also assume foul trouble or injury are higher priorities for Self than having the ability to bench a guy as punishment.

Obviously an advantage of depth is that if a guy is performing poorly you can put in the backup, but that's certainly not limited to Vick.

I don't think you burn a redshirt because there's a senior player you want to "punish".

I was sold on his athleticism from the start. But seeing his early play, Ochai had the most consistent shot on the team. Nothing sweet, but fundamentally every shot was the same. And he ripped 3s. He also was the least sped up. Let the game come to him. And yes, it’s exhibition. But still something to be said for it.

We’ve already played 4 out plenty, and that’s with Charlie and KJ still on reserve. If burning the shirt is just for a little more depth yet, fine, but I hope it’s cuz Ochai can bring more than just that.

Also, if KJ and Charlie can put up the numbers they did at previous schools but not even produce enough here to keep from loosing minutes to an de-shirted freshman, I suppose it’s a testament to just how hard it is to compete at a high major blue blood that gets everybody’s best shot every night.

Or! It’s just as much a testament to maybe Ochai is further along than anyone expected!

Yes, to me it says a lot about Charlie and KJ, particularly KJ.

What're we doing with them after this season is what I want to know?

We ran Cunliffe out of town because he couldn't outplay these guys?
