What a fucking idiot.
It's hard for a Republican to lose here in Missouri, but Parsons is working hard to do it. During the first few months of the pandemic he disappeared and everyone forgot we had a Governor.
After the election, Parsons can go home and get over it.

our school district did a choice system.
Monday Tuesday group. Then virtual Wednesday for everyone (so they can clean). Then a Thursday Friday group. Masks. Shortened days. "Trying" to distance as much as possible. Temperature checks. Quarantine rooms if someone gets sick or has a fever.
Or fully remote.
We chose fully remote. We both have flexible work schedules and both sets of grandparents are retired to fill in the gaps if needed. There are downsides to either choice, but for us the downsides for virtual were far less than in person. She is a sweet girl and socially i am not worried about her. She was more scared about going to school and "getting nina and papa or my (*her*) little brother sick".
Sounds like you have some good options. I am feeling pretty "stuck with sending them" right now. There is zero chance that I could ask my to-be senior in high school to stay home.
My 2nd grader is my big question mark. Our school system hasn't really defined what their remote learning consists of. If it consists of how they finished the year then that's a hard "no" vote. That was basically a waste of time.
Iam still home for the foreseeable future but not forever. We only have one grandparent in town here and she is pretty unreliable at being available for the kids lately. Her social calendar since her husband died has become her top priority, which is her right. But she is really of no help. And my wife has taken on some additional work to try to help recoup some lost income so her time will be less reliable.
Overall, I think my kids mental health will be better if they go back to school, especially considering what it would be like if they were home. I'd feel a lot better if the schools had presented their full plans full how things will looking behave. Fingers crossed.
Ya for many people there is no way to keep them home. So stuck between a rock and a hard place. Schools are sort of winging it.
Mental health is important. So is socialization. In our specific situation i think her mental health will be far better not worrying about getting sick at school, and we will find other avenues for the socialization aspect.
Agreed the last minute virtual learning in place at the end of last year was not great, although she did pretty good. Whatever they come up with i am confident between myself/my wife/my mom we can teach her 1st grade level curriculum very well...but we have the luxury of time and flexibility to give her tons of focused attention that simply isnt a reality for many people.
Plus, i think there is a decent chance that there will be some form of another shut down where schools go fully virtual anyway because things are worse now than when schools originally shut down in March.

That wouldn't surprise me at all. I am glad I have the flexibility to work from home when needed so that if (when) they get sent home, I can pitch in.
Fingers crossed.

Frankly, speaking to the mental health aspect of this, my daughter was scared to return to school. She is 6, so obviously not a pandemic expert, but she knows what is going on. We have had talks with her about social distancing and why we are doing it. Worked with her on washing her hands and also how to "play" with her neighborhood friends and other friends a little bit while still being safe. Even she knew that wouldnt be possible at school very easily...now, we havent let her do too much, but safe things like bike rides or playing outside while keeping a distance have gone on so that she can see some of her friends. Nothing really inside. And when we have let her go swimming at pools (all at family friends pools at their house with us there, and with kids who we know have parents being safe) she is aware that she needs to stay away from other kids faces and keep her hands to herself.

Child hospitalizations from Covid-19 surge 23% in Florida as schools statewide must reopen
https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/27/health/f ... index.html
Just weeks before schools must open across Florida, the numbers of new cases and hospitalizations due to Covid-19 have surged.
On July 16, the state had a total of 23,170 children ages 17 and under who had tested positive since the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Florida Department of Health. By July 24, that number jumped to 31,150.
That's a 34% increase in new cases among children in eight days.
And more children in Florida are requiring hospitalization. As of July 16, 246 children had been hospitalized with coronavirus. By July 24, that number had jumped to 303.
That's a 23% increase in child Covid-19 hospitalizations in eight days.

So i may have mentioned we chose remote learning for our 1st grader for at least first semester.....well we just got the text that her school district is now going remote only for 1st quarter anyway.....what a mess.
I hope all of you with school aged children are not overly burdened with remote learning if that is what you have to do. My family is fortunate enough that it isnt a burden at all due to flexible work situations for both me and my wife (my work is flexible and can be mostly done from home, hers is only part time 2 days a week and we dont depend on her income to survive....although we will pay for it down the road since saving her income is very beneficial to our future retirement).

Our babies from age 0 to 24 should be home. This isn’t rocket science.

Yes, there is a practical way to make kids wear masks. You tell them to do it and you require it. You do not let them leave a classroom without a mask on and you put a few administrators and teachers in the hallway to remind those who arent wearing them to do so. If they refuse, you suspend them, not the people pointing out the problem.
Fucking morons.
This is going to be a long couple of months coming up. At least I am glad I do not live in the South.

It was easy enough to suspend a student for taking pictures, suspend them for not wearing masks.

Exactly. Kansas is really on the borderline with this shit. I know so many "Patriots" who don't believe this whole thing is a big deal and they don't believe masks work.
But man anything south of Kansas is going to be a bitch regarding masks in school.
I'm just glad my kids actually like wearing masks. This should not be a big deal for them. Even my 2 year old says "masks on" when we get out of the car.

Our achool district has officially moved from "Green" (regular full time schedule) to "Yellow" (split between remote and in-person). Elementary school classes will split in half with one half going Mon-Tues, the school being cleaned on Wednesday and the second half going Thur-Fri. When they are not in-person, they will use a combo of zoom meetings of the lessons being taught to the in-person half and electronic assignments.
The high school has been split into quarters, with each group going in-person one day a week and the rest remote. As of right now, this "Yellow" phase is through Labor Day weekend as an attempt to buy some time. If things get better, they may go back to "Green" phase. If they get worse, they could go to "Red" phase which is obviously full remote learning.
The school will reevaluate the public health situation
The good news is that my employer announced that we will not be going back into the office until at least next January so we know that I will be available to pitch in with our little one.
Ugh, stay safe out there fellow Jayhawk fans. Good luck to you all and I hope each of you and your loved ones get to the other side of this nightmare in good health. So stressed out but overall I am grateful. Good or bad, the calendar keeps rolling. Let's get this stupid year over with already.

Why are schools starting now anyway? Don't they start at the end of August or after Labor day?

Some southern states start earlier iirc. Also some places they start early and end later, but have longer spring/thanksgiving/christmas breaks.

I wish I could find the tweet now, but it was something like, “if students can get sent home for spaghetti straps or shorts higher than their knee, then students can get sent home over a mask”

Georgia school in viral photos will close for cleaning after nine people test positive for coronavirus
A cluster of coronavirus cases has emerged at a Georgia high school that drew national attention last week after students posted pictures and videos of their peers walking without masks in tightly packed hallways, according to a letter sent to parents over the weekend.
Six students and three staff members at North Paulding High School have reported testing positive for the virus, Principal Gabe Carmona wrote in the letter, which was first reported by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He said the infected people were in school “for at least some time” last week.
Superintendent Brian Otott later announced that the school will close Monday and Tuesday and revert to virtual learning while the building is cleaned.
The district will announce Tuesday evening whether in-person instruction will resume the next day, Otott wrote to parents Sunday in a second letter, shared by a WSB-TV reporter....
