These two things are both true:

1 - The attention-to-detail stuff has been a gigantic problem on the field since we fired Mangino, and
2 - We'd be making loud, hearty fun of this sort of shit at, say, KSU Basketball.

https://www.kansascity.com/sports/colle ... 07508.html
Hayden Hatcher recently had to set his alarm for 5:30 a.m., but he says he only had himself to blame.

The Kansas football defensive end was a few minutes late to lunch at the team’s facility a couple weeks ago. He figured he might get away with it.

Hatcher was wrong. He was put on a list for “Championship Protocol,” which meant his discipline would be helping to clean the weight room an hour before anyone else arrived.

[...]

Each bumper plate — used for lifts like bench press and squats — has a Jayhawk logo affixed to it. When those are returned to racks, they must be done so with the Jayhawk appearing right-side up. Miller says offenders to that rule can be subject to “lots of yelling” and also up-downs.

[...]

[Leipold's] talks to the team at the end of drills require each person to kneel while remaining behind the yard-line that’s in front of him.

“Respect the line,” teammates have said while policing each other.

Other rules have been instituted as well. Players aren’t allowed to wear hats in team meetings, while dirty lockers also are disallowed, meaning unclean clothes need to be cleared out along with empty bottles.

I like it.
Except for the weights and logo right side up.
That’s OCD shit.

Well, it seems maybe we have White Turner Gill guiding our players.
I'm all for rules but let's realize discipline comes from within and when rules become obsessive to the point of borderline insanity, I would think some/many players would tend to turn sour towards the coaching staff. Sort of like what happened during the Gill era?

Don't be late.
Keep your locker clean.
And I want to be able to see if you're paying attention in our meetings, so no hats.

The right side up logo deal is dumb.

There’s a line between discipline and cheesy. And this staff is definitely riding that line.

Gildersleeve, the strength coach is definitely a cheesy guy.

But man, it is good to see some form of discipline. There’s no Oklahoma drill to settle disputes or issues, no messy locker rooms. If your locker room is messy it’s a bad identity of culture. Especially in a football locker room. There’s 100 lockers in there. Have to have some form of self regulation there.

I even like the logo rule. Attention to detail and a little extra work with the weights. Al Woolard used to run a stop watch IIRC during the halcyon days at LHS in the 50s. Football is doing everything together. Know your assignment. Second nature. McRaven lectures on this as part of SEAL culture.

If you read the whole article, a lot of this came about from one-on-one meetings with players. When Leipold asked players what they wanted and what they thought the program was missing, over and over players were saying discipline and structure. Miles didn't care and Beaty was a goof. The players ran rampant and could do whatever they wanted. Leipold and the staff is giving them exactly what they asked for and what they all thought the program needed. Let's see how it goes first before we write it off as Turner Gill 2.0. This isn't the same as Snickers bars after practice and don't text your girlfriend the night before the game.

I'm just saying this stuff shares a lot of genes with the Try Hard Chart.

Well there's a big difference. Everyone has an effort play chart type of thing. Finishing plays through the whistle, sprinting back on defense, whatever it may be. EVERYONE has that.

The difference is I don't think, and I sure hope they won't, mention it the first few seconds into a loss to a rival. Won't say "we kicked their butts on the play hard chart again" If Leipold stands up there and says hey our attention to detail and our playing hard really paid off after this loss by 20 points, then I'll eat crow. But I don't think he's about that. He's about that shit behind the scenes but not much in the public eye.

I think they'll keep that shit under wraps. This was all players saying this stuff. Staff hasn't really mentioned much about it outside of the "dude of the week" or whatever they pushed in the summer.

Bingo. There's a HUGE difference between this staff doing this stuff behind scenes and Bruce Weber getting up there after the KU game and whining about "we should have won because we tried harder than they did!!!!" Massive difference.

By principle I love it. At the college level, unless you have a generational QB or HC the small things can win you games. KU, in the past decade has been colossally bad at that. When you aren't a talented team to begin with and then you compound that with dumb mistakes it is a recipe for disaster. You know who is a hard ass - Nick Saban. You either buy in or you don't. No one is above that. At the pro level this type of stuff doesn't work but at the college level kids eat it up. The big thing will be does all of these changes in discipline lead to positive results?

I'm guessing if David Beaty had even an ounce of discipline with his team, they wouldn't have had to call a timeout on every 4th and 2 just to punt because the team couldn't get lined up correctly.

I agree Holiday--Paying strict attention and working through every play can't hurt and may steal a win or three. Talent isn't enough sometimes. I remember Switzer's team losing to a better-prepared team in 1975.

I don't specifically recall a bunch of miscues on special teams, but I do recall most seasons since Mangino just not having a great ST unit. Made FG's being rare, plenty of shorter punts. I would take just being average at it. Games can get out of reach fast with poor ST's.

The Sunshine boys we have not had a decent HC since the Magic Man. We still do not have one. Every time we get a new coach you say how this is it we on the way to 4,5,6 win season in just a couple years.
Every Fuckin time. And Sunshine boys you have been wrong every FUCKIN time. I get it you didn't hire the coaches but you supported them....every FUCKIN time. Listen Sunshine boys just quit with the reterioic. It is a total waste of time. Doesn't matter. I get it you the SUNSHINE boys. You still think it's OK we hired a coach that NOBODY was going to hire for the FIFTH time in a row. You think it matters at ALABAMA how you put the bumper plates back on the rack. Na no chance. We looking at a one win season with our Conference life in the balance. Sunshine boys you need to start thinking what conference does our Football team deserve to belong too.

I mean, I think Lance Leipold was gone from Buffalo within a year from when KU hired him. But alas, you're not that far off hartattackjack.

I will say though that Jesse Newell, the ever present pessimist, mentioned that he can definitely see KU going from 1 win in 2021 to around 5 wins in 2023 to maybe consistently 7 wins in 2025. He doesn't think that it will be a slow climb. He has mentioned that KU has the pieces and the depth to make that kind of jump and make it somewhat quicker than expected.

2021 might be a bit rough just because of the circumstance. I'm predicting a 2-10 record this year. However, it the rumors are true and Jason Bean is starting to take over as QB1, then I'll push it to 3-9. That dude is a dynamite athlete. The best athlete at the QB position that KU has had in decades.
