The insane (to me) thing is I know people who bitch about the high cost of gasoline and then when I ask them if they have any money invested in crude oil I often get a silent response.Overlander wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 2:32 pmHuge impact on your financial security, I assume?

You realize that pipeline was never operational? And that it oil is a global commodity? And that the US is the top producer? And that production has gone up with Biden in the Whitehouse?JKLivin wrote: ↑Thu Aug 17, 2023 2:11 pmAs I said, we'll never know now, since Brandon fulfilled his promise and killed it on Day One and gas is $3.49 a gallon where I live. Yay?

About 18 years ago, my family and I visited Iceland for the first time and we met up with an Icelander friend (used to be my colleague’s neighbor in Palo Alto). We were discussing Iceland’s unique energy situation, where everything was powered by geothermal energy except for transportation (no railroad) which was powered by fossil fuel (petroleum).
I commented on the high cost of gasoline, which was about 3-4x in the US and how they could afford it. I was interested in his perspective since he also lived in the US. I’ll never forget his response. He asked me how much I spent on gasoline each month and gave him my estimate. He said he spent less each month on gasoline because drove about 4 times less. Everything is close by and there was reliable and affordable public transportation.
There’s the answer to the high cost of gasoline for most* people.

FWIW (less than a half ounce of gasoline and a 1/3 of a paper plate?) Unlike randy, I just did a little research. I don't know what town your friend lives in but a "nighttime" bus ride in Reykjavik costs about 3x more than it does in Chicago.zsn wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 12:07 am About 18 years ago, my family and I visited Iceland for the first time and we met up with an Icelander friend (used to be my colleague’s neighbor in Palo Alto). The cost of food is considerably more in Reykjavik too. Do high gas prices play a role in that?
Also needed to be taken in to consideration is that the average salary after taxes in Reykjavik is a lot less than in Chicago.
Back to VGR!
I give him credit. He just may be able to convince Donald Trump that the best person for him (Donald Trump) to be elected President in 2024 just might be VGR!

I don’t get the pardon thing as a political play. What’s the upside? Trump is simply not ever going to quietly cede the stage, so what is gained by promising a pardon?
And the downside is obvious - a vote for you is a vote for Trump…and there simply aren’t enough of those to get you where you want to go.
As a grift, it’s an understandable play.

He is just trying to scrape off a few Trumper votes if they start getting worried that Trump won't be there to vote for.jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 7:56 am I don’t get the pardon thing as a political play. VGR says he feels "political persecution" is wrong. Ok, fair enough and I may not disagree but.....
How does he feel about the former/current/future President of the United States possibly and/or definitely breaking the law/s and being held accountable?

Re: Vivek ramaswamy
I get it, but that’s not a winning play. You need every single one of Trump’s votes, and then many more on top of that. I don’t see how pandering achieves this.twocoach wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 8:11 amHe is just trying to scrape off a few Trumper votes if they start getting worried that Trump won't be there to vote for.jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 7:56 am I don’t get the pardon thing as a political play. I do not think there is a route that exists where Trump is not found guilty of at least some of the charges he is facing. So the options are these:jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 8:50 amI get it, but that’s not a winning play. You need every single one of Trump’s votes, and then many more on top of that. 1) Trump remains in the race and is the GOP Nominee and wins the general election - kissing up to Trump and his voters gets Vivek a shot at a powerful Cabinet position
2) Trump remains in the race and is the GOP Nominee and loses the general election - kissing up to Trump and his voters gets Vivek a shot to fill the vacuum if Trump decides to no longer pursue elected office.
3) Trump drops out - Trump voters will scatter to multiple GOP candidates so kissing up to Trump gives him the best shot at scoring a higher percentage of them.
Vivek isn't winning the GOP Nomination on his own merits and he appears to understand that so he is playing the game in a manner that most increases his odds of getting something good out of this process. Attacking Trump head on is political suicide. Christie will never be elected to any office again.

Political persecution IS wrong. So is calling what is happening to Trump "political persecution" as that is not what this is at all.RainbowsandUnicorns wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 8:18 am VGR says he feels "political persecution" is wrong. Ok, fair enough and I may not disagree but.....

Re: Vivek ramaswamy
Political persecution is retaliating against your opponents (like firing Comey and hundreds of others). Or opening a sham investigation of the investigation which outlined your fealty to Russia. (Trump). Or trying to steal an election by lying about poll workers, judges, and law enforcement (Trump). Or attacking your rape victims using the authority of your office (Trump). Or threatening your allies to support a Russian info op on Hunter Biden. (Trump). Etc. This type of behavior was also criminal.

How so? I think that idea is popular amongst the people he needs to court in the primaries.twocoach wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 11:00 amWell, that's one way to show that you aren't trying to win an election.jfish26 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 10:25 am Real constitutional scholar, this guy.

Re: Vivek ramaswamy
So the plan is to defeat Trump in the primaries by pandering to him...and then defeat Biden in the general without the voters presently smoking the Rs left and right (and with the baggage that you've promised a Trump pardon)?mjl2 wrote: ↑Fri Aug 18, 2023 11:27 amHow so?
