The best testament to the growth of the Chief's secondary is the sack explosion lately. This is a decent defense.

When Buffalo loses tomorrow, is it still a neutral site?

Wrapping my brain around just how good the Chiefs offense was despite losing Tyreek Hill in free agency in the offseason. Shuster --> new MVS --> new Pacheco --> new and even later into the season we now have Toney --> new. This isn't some super easy offense to teach to one new piece of it, let alone to four new key components. Pretty amazing season that weirdly could have been a lot better when you think back over it game by game. What a fun team.

Oh, and they are going to be so much better next season...so fun.

Still not sure how we lost to Indy.

I was listening, unusual for me because I live on jazz, to BTO's "Taking Care of Business" yesterday morning. The Chief's certainly picked up that mantra yesterday. Easily their best game from a win management perspective.

That shit, that is why this team is special. Reindeer formation, Arctic Circle, snowglobe. An interview I read this morning of Mahomes said that was the play's full name. He shortened it to "snowglobe" in post game interview cuz the real name was too many words.

Professional sport is testosterone fueled revenue generating machine of egos who want be known as geniuses because most of their whole lives they have been told they were dumb jocks. This team likes to occasionally turn that on it's head and just have good dumb fun out there in front of a national TV audience. I sometime wonder if the other teams think these guys are dicks who are mocking them. But I think in the end they must secretly think, damn I wanna be on that team some day.

I have been working on the Satchel Paige Residence for the last two years. The more stories I read about the guy, he was the ultimate sports showman. His story is rich in cultural backstories as well. Satchel is one of the greatest American life stories and a KC hero. He once had the infielders all sit down for an inning "because they were working too hard" and struck out the side, just cuz he fuckin could if he wanted to. He came out of retirement at age 59 to pitch 3 innings for Charlie Finley's KC A's. They sat him next to the dugout in a rocking chair with a nurse beside him. He pitched three scoreless innings against the RedSox, retiring the side in order in the second and third innings. Satchel seemed to take the game seriously, but deep down he always seemed to remember he was playing games for a living. That's what is fun to watch in this version of the KC Chiefs. At some point in the game they are gonna scratch out a play in the dirt on the ground. They will all look at each other laugh and wonder, could that really work? And then they have the talent to pull that shit off. Even the opposing fans and players/coaches have to give them credit for making the game more fun.

Beautiful post, a cherry on top on my sports weekend. Got any recommendations on a good book about Satchel Paige?

I have to admit I never have read any books about Satchel. But I used to go down to the Negro League Baseball Museum on Saturday mornings when Buck O'Neill was still alive and listen to Buck tell stories. If we had out of town job candidate come into KC on weekends on a recruiting visit, I would take them down there and let Buck charm them. He would ask where they were from, and why they were in town, and then tell them they should take the job and move to KC cuz it is a great town. He always told Satchel Paige stories with a little prompting. I think there are a couple of good books out there, I prolly should read one as research for something I am working on. But I can't recommend one from my own reading.

I know a group of brothers who used to work in their father's sheetmetal shop on Paseo on Saturdays when they were in high school. The shop had an older guy who did clean up and machine repair in the shop. At lunch he would drive the brothers over to Bryants and bring a six pack of beer in the summer. They would sit in the parking lot and he would tell them stories of the hood. Satchel was a well known ladies man. It seems that his wife Lahoma wasn't sitting around the house pining for him while he was on the road. The old shop guy used to come by the residence and keep her company while Satchel was traveling. He liked to regale the boys with stories of his escapades.

During demolition to remove the fire damage at Satchel's former home, the Contractor working on phase one of the work pulled two large heavy as fuck and elaborate was hell bed springs from the master bedroom. They were going to be scrapped. The Contractor was Adam Jones, he is also a Kansas City legend and a crazy old fucker who has spent years saving all things KC. If you ever want to meet Adam go down to the KC River Market no Saturdays and look for the Goode Acres produce truck. He is the short wiry guy with the crazy hair and beard, hawking produce. It only takes one or two words to strike up a conversation with Adam and you will be talking like best friends in a minute or two. We have worked on a few things together over the years and we have mutual admiration for each other's work and for the weird detritus in old buildings. I asked Adam if he had rights of salvage to everything in the house since he was doing demolition. He said yeah. I pointed to the two bed springs; you know you can't toss those in the dumpster, that is Satchel and Lahoma's death beds. He liked that thought and got a big grin on his face. I said I would take them and they will be part of an art project some day instead of scrap. He loved that idea. The death beds currently sit in one of my buildings in the Empire. They have been part of a couple of installations in the last year but nothing permanent yet.

I was thinking about them bed springs, and the entrepreneurial spirit of Satchel and channeling S. P. Dinsmoor of Lucas KS.

Anyone who shows up for the hypothetical event in the Empire this summer can get their photo taken while laying on the death bed of Satchel Paige for a quarter. There will of course be a certificate of authenticity that comes with the photo seeing as you are investing the princely sum of one quarter to acquire this photographic memorabilia. It would be a cherished possession for any real sports fan. All proceeds will be donated to Cano Espinoza to help him with the cost of rebuilding of his home in Antonito which was also lost in a fire.

In order of who'd I'd like to play next week with reasonable starting lineup qualifiers:

1. Miami without Tua
2. Baltimore without Lamar
3. Baltimore with Lamar
4. Miami with Tua
5. Chargers without Mike Williams ( injured back v Denver )
6. Jacksonville
7. Chargers with Mike Williams

Agree with all of this. Miami has been a bit of a mess lately with Tua's status. Baltimore with Jackson is a little scarier as their defense has been better lately. Plus, if we're playing Miami it means they were able to knock Buffalo out, which is fantastic.
