I don't get the Memphis hype.
Will be over before we start to understand it.
It's a no-win for Memphis in the long haul. If the approach works, the architect will (deservedly) get a better job (sound familiar?). And if it doesn't...well then it's a waste.
And threw Tubby into the garbage to try it out. Tubby's worst offense: not giving into Keelon Lawson, Sr.

Sounds like the assumptions made about Chris Beard right up until he signed a massive extension to stay at Texas Tech.
Other than being completely different scenarios/situations, they are totally alike.

You're both right. Beard (or Mark Few, or Jay Wright) are the examples you'd use to support the idea that a departure isn't a done deal.
Those guys are also the minority. Usually, guys who catch fire at third-or-worse-tier programs make their way up the ladder.

Remember when Beard had the #1 ranked recruiting class?

Penny is just a lot bigger gamble than Beard was.
It's an outside the box hire that can really set that place back.

Precious commits to Memphis. Oh well, we all knew that was coming. At least they've used up all of their scholarships now.

If you're a memphis fan you'd point out the he's an alumnus and it could be his dream job.
If you're not, you see that Cal left for UK. And that guys like hoiberg and cronin spurned their alma maters for better jobs.

Right. Beard was hired b/c he had a decade on Knight's bench and then proved that all he could do as a head coach, even at D-1, was win basketball games.
To spin off of this: Penny was hired as a pipe dream experiment. The Hoiberg of Memphis that also has AAU ties.
Threw a stable program coach into the trash to make the gamble. Memphis is drunk right now with the commitments, but how fast they forget that the last time they pulled in recruiting classes with only OAD's, they were left with their dicks in their hands, no coach, and had to remove a banner.

I am mostly out of the business of trying to understand enforcement, but at this point that would sure seem to be
at least as much of a liability as an asset.

It's at least possible that Beilein's departure ultimately results in us getting two guys (including Hampton), instead of zero.

It's also possible that the wilson hampton combo pack made more sense personnel-wise than anything involving precious. Especially if there's good news about sds.
Choke on that optimism 99.

Guy from Memphis is assumed that he will leave smaller program if he starts winning is totally different than guy from Texas who was assumed to leave Texas Tech as soon as he started winning big. Got it.

No mock draft that I have seen has Tucker in the first 60 picks...

Agreed. But players make dumb decisions all the time.

Memphis is one of the best basketball cities in the United States. I’m going to sit back and watch this unfold.
