I’m beginning to think complete cancel may not be a stretch.
A mass of classes and dorms are A LOT different than a team of 15 guys, 10 coaches/staff and essential arena personnel.

I get why colleges are sending kids home. There's a mass of humanity everywhere at universities, a basketball team in multiple controlled environments is different.
I agree it's different but how do you control the "environments" in terms of holding NCAA Tournament games? You are talking travel exposure, lodging exposure, food exposure, venue exposure, and is every single player and coach going to be tested before and during the tournament on a daily basis? What about those they come in contact with? ZERO way to completely "control" all the environments they will/would be exposed to.
That's true, but measures as great in scale as those that are and will be imposed are not about ensuring there is ZERO spread; that's impossible. They're about slowing spread - flattening the curve, as they say.

In that light, it is hard to imagine the NCAA voluntarily canceling (since that would, I presume, threaten the TV revenue). Would state and local governments do it for them?

Indications are no, at least as of yet; restrictions on public events with 1,000 people would be easy to meet. Even 250 seems plausible, and that's the most restrictive one yet in the US.

Everywhere they go is closely monitored and it's controlled as to where they go.

I'll say this, I bet that letting the athletes be on their own would be far more dangerous and more likely to pick up the virus than playing in an empty arena.
Meanwhile, I've seen Oklahoma State players wonder all around the office park today as their hotel is in the area. That surprised me given the environment.

I do buy that there is more public interaction during the tournament than regular season--which is another point for empty venues.

Helms was no governing body, though.

Not of our doing then. Way of the law.

Can the rest of the NCAA's operation make do without the revenue?
I think I read somewhere that 80% of their revenue is generated from the tournament. That is huge for sure. But I hope that is not factored.

Well, if we can’t play... then let’s hope to bankroll the NCAA and fuck em in court. Get a win one way or another.

How do you empty the hotel/s? Are they going to quarantine players in the hotels?

Washington State no public gatherings over 259, including sporting events....so, no fans in Spokane?

Let’s assume they play in empty arenas....what stock do we buy to cash in on increased ad dollars?

Only in 3 counties as of now. Spokane is still on to have a full arena as they are not in the counties mentioned.

They should just go ahead and pull the trigger. Give them all plenty of time to adjust accordingly. Whatever that means.

It’s just a matter of time. Get it over with so planning can commence.

The NCAA has 4 days to decide. They need to decide by selection Sunday.

I'm of the belief that some games will be played without fans. Some arenas will have a packed house, but I think the NCAA will say it lies in hands of governments and whatnot.

I suspect that not only is this not the NCAA's decision, but also that it's in their best interest (from an insurance and contract standpoint) to let the authorities make the call, on a case by case basis.

I don't think, in that light, there's much pressure on announcing anything by Selection Sunday.

My guess is what JFish alluded to.
The NCAA puts out a statement in that regard.
Some sites are closed off to fans, others not, at least for the first round.

Depending on what happens this next week ( and how many people freak out because of it ) I could see them ( the NCAA ) stepping in for the regional sites and Atlanta.

It also (and look at you and me holding hands) puts the NCAA in its favored position: not actually doing shit.

Expect a long winded statement put out by the NCAA’s COVID-19 committee saying that after many meetings and discussions that they are deciding to let the regulators make a decision.

Governor of Ohio just said that he will issue an order to NCAA that First 4 games in Dayton and the 1st and 2nd round games be played without spectators.

So there's the first really big domino to fall.

I realize I'm quoting myself and I don't care...

Does the NCAA move to arenas that will have fans in the stands? Or do they let it play out.
