I am going to visit my daughter in Chicago on June 26-27. Looking forward to it. I haven't been up there in 5 years. First stop will be Vesecky's Bakery on Cermak to get poppyseed kolaches. I have heard they are almost as good as my aunt's kolaches, we will see. If they have good poppyseed cake I will bring one home with me. If someone knows a better location for real Bohemian poppyseed pastries in Chicago let me know.
I love that city. It is a great place to hang out for a weekend.
As someone who lives in the area, I can tell you that I have no idea what you just said

You live in Chicago and have never had poppyseed cake or a poppyseed kolache?

Correct. Not sure if I'm a real Chicagoan, never lived in the city proper.

San Fran
Charleston

Cleveland has some good spots. That surprised me. Lola is fantastic.
I always have had luck in Las Vegas too. Never been to NYC or San Fran but can imagine they're amazing.
Chicago has such good variety. DC has good variety too.

Listening to the npr show “think” on my lunch break, they’re interviewing a guy who inspected the ATF.
Basically, there’s 80k or so gun dealers in Merica, and they’re all subject to inspections by the ATF for violations, just like a restaurant is subject to inspections for health code.
But while restaurants can be shut down for health code violations, the atf inspection found that the penalties for gun seller violations are toothless. Selling illegal weapons, not conducting background checks, selling to felons, stuff like that all goes unchecked.
The sellers are often hostile toward inspectors. If there is a consequence, it’s usually not more than a letter offering a friendly reminder to correct things. If there is evidence of a criminal violation, the investigation is almost never pursued by law enforcement.
And generally, the independent inspection of the inspectors determined that not only is this unlikely to change, if anything, gun laws and access are likely to get more gun friendly with the current makeup of the courts.

So..
Code enforcement is a challenge when you have people who dont follow the rules?
Just like.....everything. restaurants, construction, butchers, fishers....

Yeah, but when a restaurant violates health code, they usually either have a few weeks to show they corrected it, or just get shut down.
When a gun shop violates gun laws, the atf sends the shop owner a letter asking them to kindly consider complying but if not nbd.

And another big difference:
When a restaurant violates health code, the common perception and response is that health code is there for a reason and needs to be in compliance.
When a gun shop breaks gun laws, the common perception and response is why don’t yall fuck off cuz I have a boner for guns

Do you know how many restaurants continue to operate after being "shut down"? Do you know how many health inspectors...(this includes USDA) are bought off or can be convinced to look the other way? Restaurants probably arent the best example of being tough enforcers.

Restaurants were the example used by the inspector during the show to contrast how one industry is subject to compliance but the other is largely not
but no, I don’t know the exact stats for restaurant health code violations

I never tried to buy off an inspector. Never heard of that being done. Probably does I suppose.
If they shut you down, they put one of their locks on your door and it isn't removed until you're in compliance.

Its all he's got. Have you seen Cascadia post anything that is his own idea or his own view or cordial? 95% (dont kill me here PhD...im estimating) is him putting down others in an attempt to prove his (what is it?) point....or wit....or something.
Its ok, im not encouraged or discouraged by Cascadias point of view and I'm not seeking his approval.
I do appreciate you and your opinion though 99. You bring something to the table (and, based on your recipes, i wish i could try it)

My brother in law is ATF. I can assure you that if a gun shop is violating laws that fall under the responsibility of the ATF that they are not just giving free passes to shop owners.
Fucking christ you say the dumbest shit in an effort to virtue signal.
