Unless the police are goi g to work for free and pay for their own cars, gas, guns, and ammo, then, yes, defunding means eliminating. Look no farther than AOC’s brilliant analogy with defunded police and the unarmed neighborhood patrols in gated communities to witness the idiocy. Let’s have police less well-armed than the criminals we expect them to protect us from. Brilliant.zsn wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 7:40 pmWhat makes you think that "defunding" = "eliminating"? No one (that I know of) is advocating eliminating the police. So, yes, their job remains preventing bad people from harming good people. That does not mean holding ostensibly bad people down by kneeling on their necks to the point of death.HouseDivided wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 3:15 pm For what it’s worth, I think they should have arrested him for assault on the spot. My point is that you can’t advocate defunding the police on one hand and then demand that they arrest someone for punching you in the next breath. With no police, you either get your ass kicked or get out of there. There is no Option C under anarchy.
Arresting someone assaulting another citizen right in front of their eyes is their job. It is as much a part of their job as not killing fellow citizens.
Defunding means taking away military hardware currently in their possession and eliminating their ability to acquire more. Defunding means instead of throwing money at the problem spending such funds wisely so that the police develop a rapport with the community intead of an adversarial relationship. Defunding means police walking the streets as opposed to cruising in a battle tank.
But then I think I am wasting my time explaining nuances to you much the same way I did trying to convince you that hydroxychloroquine treatment of SARS-CoV-2 is a waste of time and resources.

Not sure how you got that from what I said, but, please, don’t let that deter you from your PChiknbut-clever stream of passive-aggressive victim porn posts. #fightthepower

Defunding means cutting budgets and holding them responsible for their actions. Taking away the Navy SEAL gear. We have created a Fahrenheit 451 police force that justifies itself by committing crimes. Preemptive law enforcement. Slashing tires. Pepper spraying children. Shooting unarmed people in the back.

Cop who shot Rayshard Brooks in the back charged with murder
Re: The Worst People in the World...
Sounds like the prosecutor’s case depends on a number of factors:
- the taser was nonlethal
- cops didn’t bother with first aid in the immediate aftermath
- after shooting, the cop who shot Brooks then kicked him while he was down on the ground
- also while down on the ground, the other cop pressed his foot down on Brooks’ shoulder
- 8 total videos, and the prosecutor says cops never exhibited fear, but exhibited “other emotions...”

Prosecutors also relying on a statement the cop made on video “I got him.”
And the other cop is cooperating with investigators and apparently plans to testify, which is rare

I haven't seen any video of this and generally don't know much of anything about it. But, the fact that the DA saw enough and another dude is a dead in a confrontation in the current social climate is something else. Perhaps it is past time for a discussion of major overhaul in how we are policing.
Re: The Worst People in the World...
I think it's very important to have active body cams on all officers.
Re: The Worst People in the World...
Unfortunately the wearer also has the ability to turn off the camera. Better to remove the ability to turn off the camera and then have safeguards around what gets out and how. Of course nothing is going to stop an a-hole cop from putting duct tape on the camera. Need to have consequences: automatic charge of "interfering with an investigation" or "obstruction of justice"?

That's a tool that does not address the root problem.

Correct. Ideally body cams would be a waste of time and money.

Re: The Worst People in the World...
Not to poo poo on body cams, though. Today, I'd imagine that the majority of both the public and law enforcement want officers to wear body cams.
Re: The Worst People in the World...
It’s kinda crazy to think about, but body cams very well may be for the protection of citizens against the police, even more so than the other way around.
Either way, when so many police interactions end up in court, might as well gather as much evidence as possible about each case.

Re: The Worst People in the World...
FWIW I've had the opportunity to represent both families of people getting shot and killed by police officers and police officers that have shot and killed someone.
It's true that plaintiff families want video evidence just a little more than defendants because of qualified immunity but both sides would very much rather have footage than not. There's very few worse evidence than eyewitness accounts.
Also, tangentially, I've argued qualified immunity at the appellate level and there is somewhat surprisingly more bipartisan support to end it than to keep it in the legal arena. I was able to get some very conservative interest groups to write amicus briefs.
