I think last year proved he doesn't have "above average PG skills" at the college level, and definitely not the NBA level.

Defense is his elite skill. That appears to be the skill opening doors for opportunity. Focus on that. Work on the other stuff and hopefully develop additional skills over time.

You can play him at the 1 with either or both of Olidapo and Butler on the court.

But if he’s getting a shot in the league, he can’t just play defense, and has gotta offer something offensively too.

And I wonder if your assessment about his point guard skills being below average is a case of “blame the quarterback,” cuz it’s not like Garrett was surrounded by a bunch of NBA talent in waiting, like many of our point guards

A starter? I'd be shocked.

Miami, and a lot of NBA teams, run almost hockey style rotations. If he makes their main rotation, which is probably pretty optimistic, my guess is that he will be on the 2nd unit and guard the other teams best 2nd unit scorer.

Not a starter. It's not complete hockey style. The 2nd and beginning of the 4th quarters usually see 1-2 starters in with the 2nd unit guys.

MG is a 2nd and 4th quarter guy.

On a 2nd unit he can absolutely get by with defense only. Play defense, move the ball. Most 2nd units have a scorer or 2 that are volume guys.

Ya. I was thinking last 3min of 1st/3rd, and first 3min of 2nd/4th would be a great role for him (best case).

They also run a lot of their stuff thru Bam. So that helps too.

Kieff's going to score 30ppg with the 2nd unit, anyway.

Are there any guards currently in the NBA that shoot as poorly? I know that used to be a thing, guys like Andre Miller and Brevin Knight... But I can't think of any now. I think Rondo is a better shooter than Garrett?

Wasn’t Tony Allen a defensive specialist but not a very rounded player otherwise?

And Rondo’s jumper finally got a little better but that’s been in the twilight of his career. Otherwise he’s been a bad shooter who made up for it with elite pg skills

Allen and Bowen were quite awhile ago when considering today's NBA.

The guy I always come back to, and it's not perfect by any means, is Lu Dort. But, even Lu improved his jumper once he got to the NBA. Quite a bit more athletic than Garrett, but they look kind of similar out there on the defensive end.

Ben Simmons is the worst non center shooter that comes to mind.

Bowen was also a career 40% 3pt shooter. He made a living locking guys up and standing in the short corner 3. A lot like PJ Tucker does currently.

I could see him being a guy you just use in spots. Like say, someone on the other team is going off on pace for 40, you just throw Garrett on him like a wet blanket and he plays 25 minutes and cools the guy off, then has DNP-CD the next three nights cause he's not in the normal rotation.

I was thinking, did we ever see Marcus Garrett as the hound dog in a box and 1?

Then I was thinking, pretty sure that was in the 2020 tournament…sigh

John Wall was atrocious from deep (49-203 for 24%) his first three years in the league. He just had elite level speed. Hopefully Garrett's elite level defense keeps him on a roster long enough to work up a tolerably bad jumper.

Who wouldn't want Garrett in the mix when you have to have a stop? Wingspan, elite speed and athleticism and great in the fast break. Because of his maturity, he'll get some chances to make other guys better. He has deferred shooting when there are reliable points elsewhere. Works hard too. He was a liability when other teams packed in the lane, but he has really improved the mid-range game. The NBA is not college with the packed zones either.
