You guys wanna help me brainstorm questions to ask the wildlife guys?
- how likely is it that a cougar attacks a lone skier at night?
- do they migrate with the deer that spend the winters at lower elevations, or stick around the alpine areas all year?
- how do they feel about dating a younger guy?
and so on…

very unlikely
they stay in the same general area but of course migrate to some extent to follow the prey
fun fact....their paws spread wide enough to allow them to traverse mostly on top of the snow like snow shoes without sinking to terribly deep. Meaning they are faster in the snow than most any of their prey animals.

who has seen the northern lights?
Id really like to see them someday. Never have. I really need to make it up to Alaska/Yukon/Northern Territories. So many things up there I'd like to see.

my one and only experience was while flying out of anchorage
skies were overcast during our visit, so didn’t get to see them. but, when we broke through the cloud cover while flying out, the plane’s cabin was illuminated by them…or at least that’s my memory of it, nearly 25 years later

if it adds to the story, this was several miles back in the woods, after an inch or so of fresh snow fell on the hardpack trail right before dark. So, fresh, with no one else around, not a corresponding set of human prints just walking yall's Great Dane or something.
cuz if it's NOT a cat, then what? some sorta enormous canine?
maybe the Dire Wolf
600 pounds of sin!

canines (and bears) leave claw marks.
Tell tale is the 3 indent vs 2 indents on the back part of the center pad.
That and cats prints are more rounded off and canines are more angular towards the center front. Bears are flatter across the top.

yknow whats kinda off about that track? everything seems to point to cat....except the shape of the actual toes. Maybe I need a different angle or something. Usually you can tell canines and cats tracks apart fairly easily.

well, don't cats also often step their front and back paws in the same prints, as a stealth technique and stuff.
so if that print was actually two prints on top of one another, maybe it got a little fudged.
actually, I have a couple other pics from that night, hang on...

not usually. they have a tendency to overstep, back prints land in front of front prints. If moving slow or stalking they will understep and step very close together, sometimes you'll have drag marks of the feet in a sneak scenario.
