RIP Toby Keith

didn't really like his music but he had a couple good ones, all of his 1993 album. "Shouldve been a cowboy" being the best. All his yay America songs being the worst followed closely by that stupid fucking solo cup song.

I wasn't much of a fan either, but I figure any friend of one of the Big 8's all-time greats can't be all bad...

After 60 years ago today, things were never the same.

The Beatles on 'Ed Sullivan': 60 Years Later

Image

A month, several weeks before, my parents, older brother and I got home one night and my grandmother, who was there babysitting my younger sister, told us about a story she'd seen on the news about a band of guys in England with long hair, who had female fans that got so excited, they would wait outside the stage door and try to rip their clothes off and pull out locks of their hair. I was too young to appreciate what had happened with Sinatra and Elvis, and their fans, so this sounded startling and totally new, to me.

Soon, with 73 million of our fellow Americans, the entire family sat down on a Sunday night to see what all the excitement was about. That being said, there were only 3 channels, (black & white in my house), and we already always watched the Ed Sullivan Show every Sunday night. Afterward, it was as if a cultural switch had been flipped. And thank God. It turns out there was plenty of good music being made at the time, but that's not what we were being served on the AM band on our transistor radios. There, it was stuff like "Big Girls Don't Cry" by the Four Seasons, etc.

I remember I got a Beatles 3-ring notebook I was very proud of, and my best friend and I argued about who was better, the Dave Clark Five, or the Beatles. (I always suspected that his name being "David", clouded his objectivity.)

I'll never forget how much my father hated them, ostensibly, because they had long hair. Obviously, my father fell victim to the, "First it's long-hair, then it's..." Slippery Slope, theory. To try to discourage my brother and me from liking them, and rock music in general, my father would come home from work with stories like: The Beatles and the Rolling Stones are having a contest to see who can go the longest without taking a bath. I'm almost 100% convinced he believed it.

The mid-60s were phenomenol. Cannonball Adderley, Phil Woods, Stan, and the rise of the virtuoso big bands. And virtuoso rock including singers and arrangers. Strongest period of diversity and greatness we will ever experience. Thank God for recordings. Today the easy digital lines and lack of money invested across pop music is tragic. But there are still jazz and alternate rock islands of greatness

Since it is the American music, I expect no less from you. A life without jazz is pretty bleak. And Carla Bley is awesome.

I’m kinda with MICH.
Improv jazz is awful.
Experimental jazz just kill me.

I had an ex who had jazz friends. Improv jazz. They’d have gigs up in nyc every four months or so. They’d crash on our floor on sleeping bags for a few days and we were obligated to go see at least one of their shows. Nightmares still.

I almost didn't click on this link when the algorithm tried to make me, but I'm glad I did.

Recently compiled data reveals decades-long trends in the commercial music business.

For instance, 61% of songs in 2023 used no profanity, 32% had some profanity, and 7% had a lot. Which means, songs that use no profanity are at the same level now as songs in 2014...

Have we fallen into a mesmerized state that makes us accept as inevitable that which is inferior or detrimental, as though having lost the will or the vision to demand that which is good?

MTV was an amazing phenomenon when it started. It really did change things.

The launch, the legendary six words, the incomparable VKTRS. That’s all followed by the first network promo, Pat Benetar’s “You Better Run,” the debut by the original VJ’s, Superman II ad, Dolby commercial, and Mark Goodman doing the first ever intro of a video. 1 August 1981. Nothing in TV will ever again capture this kind of magic.

We got to move these refrigerators, we gotta move these color TVs

We got to move these refrigerators, we got to move these color TVs

We got to move these refrigerators, we gotta move these color TVs

Lollapalooza Chicago 2024.
First time ever there isn't a single performer I can say I really want to see/hear.
Doesn't mean there aren't performers I wouldn't like to see/hear. There are ALAWYS performers I have never seen/heard that I end up enjoying.
All that being said, I am probably not going this year.
For the same amount of money I usually pay for Lollapalooza, I could fly to Vegas, stay in a hotel, go see/hear Dead & Company at The Sphere, and go see some other band/musician perform.

On a related note.... I will be in LA during the 2nd Coachella weekend.
There are multiple performers I would like to see/hear. Could drive a couple hours and go Friday and Saturday. Probably won't.

I love that she quotes Ornette Coleman's Lonely Woman in one of her furious cadenzas.
