I buy that if it makes it a pain for paying customers.

To your point, I guess I'll take a wait and see approach. If it becomes not worth it, I'll cancel the service.

But I'm seeing a lot of, "we should all cancel to show netflix"....I mean, as a paying customer, I don't really feel bad for the freeloaders no longer being able to freeload.

If you're charging an additional fee, something like 4.99 month, does it matter? Netflix increases total revenue, and it's better than having freeloaders. Families can't be too upset about a minor additional cost that is providing something extra.

I admittedly don't know all the details about this. Like, so many hotels offer use of your own netflix and when you're on Wi-Fi...does this all go away. My understanding was that the "home" account had to login every 31 days...how much are they limiting additional screens?
You're getting to the heart of the matter: the task for Netflix (for example) is to figure out the sweet spot.

They're never going to stop all freeloading. Efforts to do so are both futile (it's asymmetric warfare) and counterproductive (congrats, you reduced freeloading by 2.7% but chased off 15% of your subscribers by making it a pain in the ass to use your service).

So, how do you mitigate the harms of freeloading without alienating customers?

There's not really a simple, obvious way. I wonder if it works better with carrot than stick. For example, perhaps the next price increase only applies, or ads are only shown, to those who do NOT perform the new verification stuff.
I agree completely with the main point of your post.

But the specific example you gave would actually piss me off.
The customer has responsibility, too. I would not be pissed off by doing my part (as a paying customer) to reduce the harm from freeloading...because the inevitable outcome of unmitigated freeloading is that ALL PAYING CUSTOMERS end up footing the bill for it.

There are interesting echoes of the amateurism debate here: if the person interested in paying money for college basketball does not have to subsidize other college sports in paying money for college basketball, then the knock-on effect will be the diminishment of the other college sports.
Let's not.

I need to think about to what extent I agree with the first sentence.

But, here's what I know. If I hadn't logged into Netflix for a while, and as a result, my bill went up and there were suddenly commercials...I'd be pissed.

If I logged in while staying in a hotel and had to delete a previous place I had logged in to do so, that I'd be ok with.

How so? The vast majority of the honest paying customers won't even notice the change because people use Netflix at home.

And the outrage on twitter and reddit is absolutely about cracking down on freeloading. Look at the first tweet you shared. I've seen that tweet a dozen times in the last 48 hours.
It's not like this is an entirely new problem set. There are authentication apps on phones that, pretty damn painlessly, 2FA for work email/DMS etc.

But again you're drilling into implementation concerns. I'm not suggesting that things would be automatic. There would be a process that is essentially opt-in. And, if you don't opt-in when asked, then there are consequences.

And this seems to be even less intrusive. Your home TV's, for example, will experience no changes and not be any different from now.

What Netflix is doing is also already being done by the YouTube TV, Hulu Live, Sling, etc.'s.

Lol, I am identifying a real, on-the-ground problem that arises from my side of the amateurism thing being the winning side. If sponsor money doesn't subsidize scholarships/costs for non-revenue sports, then the logical, inevitable result is that non-revenue sports are diminished.

The same is true for TV. If consumers can pick and choose which college sports they pay for...then only those sports will be the ones on TV.

There's no value judgment there - it's neither "good" nor "bad". But, it's just what WOULD happen if all college sports were PPV.

Right. And the UE gets better every quarter. For example, bespoke QR codes (and being logged into a service on your phone) make authenticating in a hotel room a process that takes about as much time as making a cup of coffee in the same room.

I knew, exactly when I posted that, that'd you be along shortly trying to bring your view of what amateurism should be into the conversation when that's been covered plenty, with just completely different viewpoints on that subject, and it won't go anywhere.

My opinion on how extra money generated from the athletes should be distributed is in that long long thread you started some time ago.

You're so committed to grievance here that you're missing the point entirely. You're the one bringing your pathos from that thread into this one.

What I'm saying is true: if college sports are PPV, then non-revenue sports will largely disappear from mainstream view. I'm not making a value judgment there. It's just what would happen.

Similarly, an absolutely unavoidable consequence of "opening up" the market for paying college athletes is that non-revenue sports will suffer. No value judgment. It's just what will happen.

I think it’s sort of an archaic measure taken. Digital media by its very nature can be accessed anywhere, but now Netflix is trying to impose some location constraints.

What next, only make that 90s show viewable on those big box tube TVs?

Trick question, cuz that actually is the TV Mich owns.

No, not really. I access my Netflix account from all over the world on double digit devices (if you include hotel TV's) and I will continue to be able to do so with zero differences or interruptions.

In fact, Netflix is one of the better providers on that as some won't let you access your own account outside of your base country.

But doesn’t this latest update open the door for like you trying to login somewhere and Netflix saying, sorry but you can’t cuz you haven’t logged in from your home network recently enough?

Or have to get a special temporary password or something.

I dunno.

But for real the irony of that tweet from 2017!

Not really. It's device specific.

So if you haven't logged into netflix on your iPad for more than 31 days at home and then you try to somewhere else in the country, then you'd run into problems. That's a pretty narrow scenario, and even then Netflix is saying there is a process where you can get it up and running, i.e. them sending you a code via email/text to activate the device.

Right. If it's only actually difficult to access the content if you are not in fact a paying subscriber...isn't that sort of the point?
