I think we learn to be a decent person, usually by making mistakes and being allowed to redeem ourselves through changed behavior. Nobody is born decent or kind or taking other people into consideration. They have to be taught. This is a general statement not specific to these kids.
The real punishment for these kids is the fact that the internet never forgets. This poor choice will follow them around and haunt them for years to come....even if they learn and grow from it (which, should bw the goal right?).

My greatest hope is that I am never defined by my worst decisions and most ignorant statements in life. Seems like we all deserve to be afforded a measure of grace sufficient to allow for growth and change.
