Malinger has a new piece out in the kc star about Big12 turmoil
behind paywall tho
Pretty innocuous, really. Some relevant clips:
And still another: “Every league is structured similarly to what ours is. There’s three or four bell cows and there’s the rest.”
That last line is an unintentional self-own, because who are the Big 12’s bell cows now? Oklahoma State, which has always been walking uphill in chasing the Sooners? Baylor, which has had some success in football and basketball but lacks regional or national pull? Kansas, which now has the largest known athletic budget in the conference (private schools like Baylor aren’t included), but stinks out loud at football?
. . .
They’re together, for now, but nobody from any of these schools can swear that this is sustainable.
Recently, Kansas athletic director Travis Goff said the quiet part out loud when he was asked if the Big 12 adding four new members closed the door on KU being open to other conversations.
“No,” he said. “The beauty of it is, is when you think about being focused on what’s best for Kansas, that applies to anything we do. It applies to conference affiliation …”
That was only reinforced this week. One Big 12 source said he spent part of the basketball media day “looking around the room and wondering who’s working who.” Another, told that at least one insider gave the league less than two years before it would inevitably experience another shakeup, responded: “I don’t know, but it’s not up to us and that’s the problem.”
. . .
The answers for KU and K-State are … uncomfortable.
For Kansas, the reality is that they’re behind schools like Rutgers, Mississippi State, Indiana and Missouri in revenue. The Jayhawk is a strong national brand, the AAU designation matters and the basketball program is a certified giant. But that’s made almost meaningless by KU’s performance in football, which determines the structure of power in college sports.
K-State’s reality is even more frustrating. KSU has done everything right — good facilities, strong ticket sales, bowl games in nine of the last 10 non-COVID seasons. But because K-State operates with the smallest known budget in the Big 12, in part because of a geographic disadvantage that’s simply out of their control, the Wildcats could be pushed to the wrong side of the fault line.
In other words, KU needs football to be un-embarrassing fast (which could be made more difficult by realignment and the NCAA’s new transfer rules); and K-State might benefit from some good ol’ fashioned politicking — KSU’s strengths and successes could be made better known, and perhaps thus more widely accepted.

as long as the BIG 12 positions its' self to be a power 5, which we are right now, the BIG 12 will be a power 5 and not be left out of whatever huggy is blubbering about.
with the subtraction of two and the addition of 4, the BIG 12 is is great shape. just need to stay that way.

Nope the Big 12 is toast. With OU and UT out they moving to G6. The power 5 is going to be power 4.
The moves of adding schools was reactionary versus a forward move, which is just not going to work.
There is going to be additional teams leaving Big 12. Who and when are the only questions left to be answered. Stupid football program only thing holding us back. If we just had a HC who was decent and showing progress we probably ok but this last hire might just seal our fate.

Texas Tech fired their football coach today. Since firing Mike Leach in 2009, Texas Tech has not finished .500 in the Big 12 and is 33-65 in that span in conference play.
Firing Mike Leach because he was a big meanie to a few players is going as well for Texas Tech as Kansas firing Mangino because he was a big meanie to a few players.

Tech also fired Kliff Kingsbury who then went and became the Arizona Cardinals HC who are presently the only team 7-0.
I know it's probably a little early to fire our HC but I wouldn't have a problem with it. LMAO

Iowa State pulling out of AAU. Requirement for Big 10. So they’re likely staying Big 12 for long term. Does Kansas..?

That's weird. AAU on its face has nothing to do with conference affiliation, and I don't think there is a good reason a University wouldn't want the membership.
Could be as simple as they knew their research funding outlook was really bad and the time and cost of trying to remain AAU wasn't worth it.
Saw that Iowa State cited AAU favoring medical school funding and without a med school, I could see their position becoming shaky.
But, no, regardless of athletic conference, KU should not abandon AAU membership.

KU should absolutely stay in the AAU and continue to push for Big 10 membership. We’re about to be in the new Mountain West/Sun Belt Conference

Agreed 100%. Kansas needs to shoot for the 2nd best conference in collegiate sports. They have been in the 3rd or 4th best conference, about to be 5th best if they stay with Big 12.

And the gap between 4 and 5 is going to be so vast that the Power 5 will likely become the Power 4. Big 12 will be one of the Other 6

Have heard/read there is kind of a continuous discussion. Lots of the talk is focusing around KU having to add more sports. And what sports they would add and the like.

Small update: Houston, Cincinnati, and UCF are all planning to join in 2023-24 when BYU comes in.

Yeah. So KUs home non-con scheduled vs Houston is going to go away. So KU has to fill a non-con game for 2023.

If there are 12 teams, I would assume 8 conference games.
If there are 14 teams, how many conference games? Looks like the B1G has 9 conference games.
