2. The Kansas City Royals

I won’t delve too much into this team because I’ve already written about the Royals’ outstanding 2018 draft but the team continues to see unprecedented results from the arms selected just over a year ago. The club could have a starting rotation made up entirely of arms selected in the 2018 draft by the end of 2021 — and some might even have to start out in the bullpen. Like the Tigers, the Royals organization could be very interesting in the next couple of years if it can get some hitting.

Big-picture, I'm very bullish, especially because (Mitch Hedberg voice), when starters fail they turn into relievers.

But that "Projected 2021 Rotation" is a joke. Unless something terrible happens, Keller will be there (and most likely Junis, also). And, lord, it will be beating the odds if all five of those guys pitch in the majors (let alone comprise, at any single time, the Royals' rotation).

David Glass in discussions to sell the club.

I will likely be in the minority here, but this is not good news. Glass has been pretty damn near a model owner for the last decade. The biggest (only?) financial advantage the Royals have right now is that ownership is playing with a billion dollars of house money. I don't think fans are going to like what things look like when the owner has invested market value just to buy the club.

I don’t know Fish. KC guy buying it. New TV deal in the works. Glass is making a business decision (10x ROI) and now the Royals will have a local guy who will be present in many ways.

Glass did all he could do with Moore and Yost and the organization.

I would be happy to be proven wrong, but it seems like the "KC guy buying it" is much more of a front to an investment group than the lead investor himself.

I'm all for having someone other than Mr. Walmart owning the team. His cheap ass closed the window much sooner than needed.

...they won't move to Vegas, but this certainly means we're headed for a good old fashioned public money stadium+mixed-use shakedown, but with a State Line Road twist.

You don't see baseball clubs move much unlike the NFL, NBA or NHL. Most cities w/o a baseball team don't have a stadium sitting around that would meet the requirements of MLB. But I do get concerned about cities that have Triple A teams that are growing faster than KC (i.e. Nashville, Austin, Portland). KC just needs to get off the pot and commit to a stadium downtown. Then the Chiefs will come calling for a new state of the art stadium as well.

But: no, it doesn't. Short of selling land to a developer and/or a team, KC doesn't have to do anything.

Now, of course it probably will, which is incredibly frustrating.

Only frustrating if you assume the worst (and the new norm).

I will eat 7YH's shorts if there is not a new Royals stadium that is directly or indirectly taxpayer-funded some time in the next ten years.
