What could have POSSIBLY been better MIGHT have been to have the teams arrive in Indianapolis, "quarantine" for 10 days, and then play games.
Are they accelerating the tournament into 10 days instead of the typical 3 weeks? I hadn't heard, just wondering.

There is no question that the integrity of the tournament would have been better served by this approach.
There are lots of reasons it wasn't done this way, some better than others. But if the question is, "how do you keep the teams as intact as possible," and "wait until May"* isn't an acceptable answer, then a 10-day, quarantined break between conference tournaments and the NCAA was the next best thing.
* We're in a different (and good) phase of vaccine availability. It would have been smart, and appropriate, for the players and coaches to volunteer at vaccine sites this week and next, get their first shots, and be on track to play the tournament unbubbled in late April/early May.

There has been bumps in the road all season. If you are waiting for the bumps to smooth out, the thing will never get played. You might as well just cancel again.

I have a eerie feeling that the last team standing in one piece will be the team that is cutting down the nets.

The
only reason to be this pessimistic at the moment is that people who share a lot of ideologies with you are vaccine-resistant (and/or Covid deniers).

Because of course young people in the prime of their life, in peak physical condition, at almost no risk, should be jumping the line so the fish can be uninterruptedly entertained for his entertainment. Of course.

they aren’t really jumping line if they are actively volunteering at vaccination sites
volunteers have been getting vaccines since almost day 1

Life comes at you fast. This isn't six weeks ago - high-risk populations have largely been served. Availability is high and growing still.
At this point, there's not a ton of marginal value in prioritizing at all anymore (and in fact there's negative value if shots are going unused); young and healthy people are
more effective spreaders than others, even. Shots in arms for everyone.

I'm one of the fools who does a crap load of brackets/pools.
If I could do just one, I would probably have to go with all number 1s. Why wouldn't/shouldn't I?

Sorry. Not going to be able to separate the tournament from this issue.
