much like social media, i tend to stay away from watching espn unless there’s a KU game on
are these endorsement deals really taking over their coverage?
TyTy's endorsement was front page on ESPN.
While I think that will probably go away - as in, news that a player signed a massive endorsement deal - on front page news, I don't think it will go away A. as a recruitment tactic and B. in your consumption of college basketball as a media - i.e. players in ads pimping a product.
I'd also argue that, now that this has opened up ( NIL ), it will likely lead to the next step in paying players, which would be some sort of contract. And now we've got pro basketball for younger players.

Yes, and so with it is a decrease in interest from a large portion of the fan base.
is there any actual evidence of this?
i’m not saying your wrong, necessarily, but i really think it’s to early to know for sure...particularly the “large portion” aspect
Yes.
Pdub and I are a large portion of the fan base.
I may well be wrong, but I'll bet a minority of college sports fans would say they oppose NIL.
And the number who
actually turn away is going to be a fraction of that number.

Mmhmm. So the right thing to do was to
plan for this. Not let it overrun the sport.

The D-III sports door has always been there for anyone that doesn't like what D-1 sports are (if you can find it on TV).
This minority of fans don't need to cancel culture college basketball because they don't agree with what it is. What they want exists.

It's the lack of planning I largely have a problem with.
It's the wild west, which basically means the infrastructure of cheating that was built, is now used as a superhighway, to continue to use this for the same purpose it was used before.
My issue was never about Kofi Cockburn getting an endorsement deal for an antibiotic the cures chlamydia.
My biggest concern was using it as a recruiting tool, and that's exactly how it's being used.
I was poo-pooed for suggesting that there be any regulations preventing it.

Is there evidence NIL is being used as a recruiting tool?
Are there not Porsche dealerships anywhere besides Lexington?
Isn’t Bryce Thompson pimping like nissans in Stillwater?
wasn’t Zion rolling Mercedes SUVs around Durham?
Didn’t Wilt come to Kansas for the beach life?
You know, Wescoe.

"At his team's media day Wednesday, coach John Calipari said players are not coming to Kentucky for NIL opportunities, but he also added that his team has taken advantage of them.
"They don't come here because of name, image and likeness, but let me say this: To this point, our players have the most [NIL] transactions on our campus, and there is only really 10 of them taking advantage, and they have the most transactions on this campus," he said. "They are benefiting [from] this."

Is that a recruiting tool explicitly tho?
Like did the gm of the Porsche dealership come with Cal for the in-home visit?

So much of the excitement of college sports is essentially tribalism. (Whether that in and of itself is a good thing is for another thread). But when a HS student chooses a school based on what car he gets, and not the school, the coach, the location...some of that is lost.
Save me the "this has always been going on" speech, it wasn't how college athletics were presented by the media, but now it is. It's on espn, it's part of the telecasts, etc.
It does make me less interested. It's eroding what makes college sports special, for me. The connection between the students/alumni and the players is weakened.
And, like I predicted, it isn't about a Jr or Sr who played great getting some money to be in a commercial, it immediately became just a recruiting mechanism. The very thing people said wouldn't happen. This only furthers the gap between the haves and the have nots. The money isn't going to be awarded to the players who generate the most excitement, or increase ticket sales, or result in the most wins. It's just a recruiting tool to lure unproven players to a school. It's not a fair market, the players who will get the most money are the ones who play for one year and leave. It will be the Diallos and Alexanders getting paid, not Grahams and Masons.
this all aligns with my thoughts

“The connection between the students/alumni and the players is weakened.”
A player rolling around in a Porsche makes it more likely he wakes up the next morning in Chi-O house, not less.

There are dealerships that sell fancy cars in Kansas City too.
I'd guess NIL had nothing to with him not choosing Kansas.
