I don't mind Hunter. He's just a different kind of cat. He seems to really appreciate the tradition here and playing in Allen Fieldhouse. When you have a collection of guys from all over the country and diverse backgrounds you're going to have a wide range of personalities.

'I assume you believe him when he said that?'

For sure.
Because everyone could see that was what he was doing.

But then do I think he's being totally forthright when trying to gain a touch of sympathy by saying, 'hey, y'all, I coulda done this, at least I didn't do this'?

No. I do not.

So you believe him when he admits to being selfish, but you do not believe him when he says the dollars were higher elsewhere?

Supposedly NOT Kentucky.

Then I stand by saying it seems selective - you believe him when he says things that are consistent with your judgment of him (when he says that he is selfish), and not when he he says things that aren't (when he says that Kansas wasn't the highest bidder).

That's textbook confirmation bias, and it has affected how you view his choice about what to do next year.

I just think he's pretty self-aware and pretty honest all around - which might just make him a genuine prick who is a genuine prick. I have ZERO issue with your or anyone else taking offense with his antics, so long as you're being consistent.

I think that if the total package - money AND all of the cool shit that comes with playing here - was worth less to him than the the total package in, like, Spain, he'd go to Spain. In my opinion, that would be entirely consistent with the choice he made in leaving Michigan for here. And, in my opinion, it's how people make decisions generally.

Show me a recruit who chose to be here when the things that mattered the most to that recruit were known by that recruit to be better elsewhere, and I'll show you a guy that shouldn't have come here. I think we can all come up with a few examples of that.

It's an interesting conversation that illuminates a lot of the what are we here for exactly. I, personally - absent off-court SHIT - have a hard time feeling meh about the idea of an AA caliber guy who wants to be here, choosing to be here.

Probably somewhere random like Rutgers. They have the 2 top 3 recruits next year and the only explanation I have for that is they outbid people

...Despite Backus’ success in other areas including his visibility as the millionaire Thurston Howell III on the popular television series Gilligan’s Island, he was always haunted by the fame of Magoo. He said, “I’d like to bury the old creep and get some good dramatic roles in movies. He is a pain in the posterior. Every time I start to be a serious actor I lose out because someone – usually a producer – says I’m Magoo.”

Yet despite those often repeated feelings, Backus for many years drove around Hollywood with the license plate “Q MAGOO” and kept performing the character.

In a 1978 interview, Backus said, “Magoo has been very good to me but I certainly don’t think of him as myself. He is a pain in the posterior.

“We made up a complete biography for the little jerk. He graduated from Rutgers. He’s a card-carrying Republican and was on the Committee to Re-elect William McKinley. The only thing left to do is an X-rated Magoo picture.”

[...]

Rutgers Magazine finding no connection between the creators of Mr. Magoo or actor Jim Backus to the university stated UPA wanted Magoo to be “a college alumnus who was still fired up with the old school spirit, and [they felt] Rutgers was the embodiment of the ‘old school tie’ in America.”...

I'm sure UCLA, USC, Stanford, etc. could put together large offers.

But who the fuck wants to play for a West Coast school?

I don’t want to put words in your mouth, and you had me piece it together from multiple places.

Do you believe Hunter when he called himself selfish?

Do you believe Hunter when he said Kansas was not the highest bidder?

If your answer is not the same to each question, why?

Ok.

I asked:
In the Barstool interview, he said, "I basically gave [my legacy at Michigan] up to try to be selfish and do what's best for me and my career, not what's best for anybody else's career."

I assume you believe him when he said that?
You responded:
For sure.
Because everyone could see that was what he was doing.

But then do I think he's being totally forthright when trying to gain a touch of sympathy by saying, 'hey, y'all, I coulda done this, at least I didn't do this'?

No. I do not.
So, you are saying that (1) yes, you believe him when he called himself selfish, but (2) no, you do not believe him [when, I am assuming (including based on the next posts), he said the dollars were higher elsewhere].

Is this correct?

I believe him when he was speaking about something that people would be able to read by details and events that had transpired in the public. He transferred. His legacy was tarnished. People knew why he was transferring.

I don't believe him ( or don't necessarily believe him ) when he is speaking about things we would never be able to know. We don't know what programs offered him. Maybe somewhere did offer him some more money ( I doubt it as the numbers at Kansas have been rumored to be very high ), who knows, but I'm gathering in his mind the most 'dollar bills y'all' would show in the present and future at Kansas. It's his way of saying, "hey, i'm not ALL about the money!" when yea, he's all about the money.
