Re: Conference Realignment..?

sigh
So now Bill Walton has to call the Big Ten the "Conference of Champions" through an entire telecast?
Right. No matter if it concerns the B1G or Big 12, this is the best news for KU in conference realignment in a long, long time.NewtonHawk11 wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 9:31 am The Big 12 does have an opportunity. Still wouldn't be my favorite opportunity for Kansas, but an opportunity.
There are very, very high contractual and monetary hurdles to clear to get anyone out of the ACC, but I do think that schools like Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Florida State might be attainable if the Big 12 were to add a couple of strong Pac schools, particularly the Arizona schools.
If Notre Dame gets yanked out of the ACC then that house of cards will fall apart quickly.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 9:50 amThere are very, very high contractual and monetary hurdles to clear to get anyone out of the ACC, but I do think that schools like Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Florida State might be attainable if the Big 12 were to add a couple of strong Pac schools, particularly the Arizona schools.
It's highly unlikely because of the contractual stuff, I agree.
The best thing the new commissioner can do is come in and be aggressive in solidifying the Big 12's spot as #3. You're not going to be able to buy your way into 1 or 2. That's nailed down now. If KU doesn't land a spot in say a 20-team B1G, the opportunity exists to make the Big 12 work. But the new commissioner can't come in and sit on his thumb the way Bob Bowlsby did for 10 years.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:18 amIt's highly unlikely because of the contractual stuff, I agree.
But, I wouldn't hate to see the new Big 12 Jay-Z CEO not be such a traditional, good ol' boy pussy like so many of the conferences' commissioners.
The Pac-12 statement yesterday sounded exactly like the Big 12 the last decade.
With all due respect, I just don't see any path for the Big 12 to grab a bigger per-school revenue share than the ACC without Texas. Not to mention the league is also replacing it's 2nd biggest football brand.UnholyLivingDead wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:24 amThe best thing the new commissioner can do is come in and be aggressive in solidifying the Big 12's spot as #3. My thought is that there aren't that many big national brands left to move around anyway. If the endgame is a 20+ member B1G and a 20+ member SEC then the rest is a wash. The Big 12 being in the middle of the country with the ability to go either east or west because they have a footprint in both places is probably more valuable than what the Pac 12 has right now. And the ACC is pinned in by the SEC. If the time comes for the SEC to poach the 2 or 3 good ACC football brands, the ACC doesn't have anywhere to expand. Going further north up the east coast doesn't make your brand better in the eyes of football.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:36 amWith all due respect, I just don't see any path for the Big 12 to grab a bigger per-school revenue share than the ACC without Texas. I understand where you're coming from now, although I'd venture to guess that the ACC could eat the Big 12 quicker than the other way around.UnholyLivingDead wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:42 amMy thought is that there aren't that many big national brands left to move around anyway. I totally agree with you, if the B1G ends up going to 20-24 teams, I am confident KU will have a spot there. I just think there's an opportunity for the Big 12 to be in decent shape in the smaller chance that does not happen.CrimsonNBlue wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:49 amI understand where you're coming from now, although I'd venture to guess that the ACC could eat the Big 12 quicker than the other way around.UnholyLivingDead wrote: ↑Fri Jul 01, 2022 10:42 amMy thought is that there aren't that many big national brands left to move around anyway. That said, I didn't really consider this scenario, because under the 20+ BIG and SEC scenario, I very much want, and very much believe, that KU would find itself in one of the 20+ conferences, the most likely being B1G.
