Not a fumble. But yeah, the clock should have run on that big pass.
Wrong. No defensive player touched the receiver. His hand hit the OB line after he made the catch.
Also on the incomplete pass, ie fumble, he was trying to bring the ball back, like a pump fake, and he lost control. Phil thought it was a fumble.

Meh, we won a game that we kinda sucked in. I dont care enough to argue it. Go (figure some shit out) Chiefs!

Actually he was touched on the way down. By rule he was down inbounds. The ref in NY agreed. Timing error that could have killed the Chiefs

Is this the last time we have to play down there on that shitty field?

And he hit #27s foot when he was sliding on the ground.

Hope so. Altitude and bad turf. Terrible venue. Clammy too.

He was touched before he was out of bounds. Clock shoulda run. Announcer saw it too.
Fortunately for us, Rivers reverted back to KC Chiefs Rivers after his solid game last season.

Needed this bye big time.
Can go on a streak—could still go 11-5.

I’m thinking 11-5.
They need some help to get a bye. Ravens have a tough schedule coming up. Rams 49ers and Bills. 3 good teams.
Patriots go Cowboys, Texans and Chiefs.

I dont care about the bye. We need to win a bunch to ensure we make the playoffs period.

Both local radio shows this morning were going in on the "you HAVE to be able to run the ball to close games out" trope.
I mean - maybe not? This team is not constructed to reliably run the ball three times and pick up ten yards. Its best offense is clearly to keep throwing, and with multiple options.
They damn near blew this game the same way they blew the last one - giving Mahomes a one-read short pass to clinch a game. Fuck that - run your stuff.

You have to be able to mix in the run game if nothing but for clock control ( beyond the obvious of keeping the defense honest ).
McCoy was looking decent enough at points.

But on that last drive, a score ices the game, regardless of how much time is left. That's not a situation where you need to control the clock. This was made obvious when...the Chargers had plenty of time.

Agreed. If you need all of 4 INT's to win a game, then I'm not punting the rest of the game outside of a 4th and long in own territory situation. Especially with that QB, TE and a 45 year old RB.
Chiefs fans have been bitching about that for a few weeks now, but I agree with it. Mahomes raises the 4th down conversion percentage a bunch.

It's not so dissimilar to when (in basketball) we have live-by-the-three, die-by-the-three teams. You
can't stop running your best stuff just because orthodoxy says so. You can't turn a finesse team into a bullyball team, if you don't have the personnel for it.

Completely agree with Fish. I will also throw in that every NFL team can stop the run when committed. Scoring needs to be the Chiefs priority. Defense is at a considerable disadvantage late where penalties can continue play even after time expires. Plus the timing errors and free timeout on the meaningless fumble pass. I will say that conditions seemed to be pretty bad for both QBs gripping the ball. It must have been a little moist at altitude. Anyway, KC up by 9 or more is the Mahomes tempo+ that should be exploited every week.

Not to mention - our defense was
not going to get a stop, absent a gift (whether officials or Philip). Our pass rushers could barely get off the floor. There's very, very little advantage gained in pinning them deep (obviously).
Cliche, but: our best defense was going to be the offense scoring more points.

If you're talking the end of the game - you need to run time off.
Chargers had to use their last timeout with 3:11 because of a run.
We milked another 40 odd seconds off from another run.
Then we tried a pass play but didn't work out - Mahomes stayed in bounds and you had the two minute warning.
We try to pass it for all three plays and don't get a first down they have 3 minutes left and a timeout.

This is a little hindsight 20/20 here ( in your favor ) because of the Williams 50 yard bomb but the Chargers had 50 yards of offense in the 2nd half up to that point ( under two minutes left ) and we pinned them to their own 9. The Chiefs defense had clearly adjusted. Again, they are pretty awful all around but were doing well at the time.
Running it with three minutes left a couple times so the Chargers burn their timeouts and we burn the other 'timeout' at the two minute warning was the right call. It was in Mahomes hands at 3rd and short and he didn't convert.
