WVU end with 51 points. KSU also had 7 team fouls at this point or earlier, ended with 7 team fouls.
Kitties go on 14-0 run, Huggy doesn't call a single TO in that stretch. HOF coach???
Sign of a guy who has just given up on the season.
Not much to tell them. They cant even run basic offense. They did well to keep it close as long as they did.

We control our own destiny, which is remarkable. The Dok injury, the SDS ineligibility, the Vick situation, the Garrett injury.

Those things dominate the talk, that and Agbaji being one of our three best players despite his redshirt plans keeping him out half the season. Add to that, that Grimes might be our biggest Guard recruiting bust (Selby might keep him outta the top spot), Garrett might be the second worst offensive player under Self (behind teammate Moore), KJ is not as good as his numbers at Memphis indicated, this is the 3rd year in a row that our starting PG has to play 40 mpg because we don't have a backup only this year it's a freshman, and Charlie Moore might be the worst scholarship player in the Self era.

I'd give Self a ton of credit for this, only he's the reason we have most of these issues. It's like a snake eating itself, or something.

I would say that Grimes is the biggest recruiting bust of the Self era regardless of position, at least so far.

It's probably the biggest story of the season.

The other busts had outside forces going against them beyond their control. Grimes came in and was Self's guy from the second he committed. What a strange story.

Right, I'd rank Selby Diallo and Alexander as bigger busts, but as you mentioned there were tangible reasons that played a role for those three.

I don't remember any of those 3 being labeled as the "most complete player in the Freshman class" by more than a few places.

Grimes was ranked 8th and is averaging 8/2/2
Selby was ranked 6th (as high as #1) and averaged 8/2/2 and faded at the end (injury...I know)
Cliff was ranked 4th and averaged 8/5/0 and didn't finish the season
Diallo was ranked 6th and averaged 3/3/0 and got most of his stats in garbage time.

Diallo is the biggest bust to me, even though the ncaa fucked with him. Then Cliff by virtue of loosing elligibility, then Selby because he had the highest expectations and finished the year so badly.

Grimes seems to be improving and I think he'll finish the year with the best numbers of the 4.

I get where they were ranked and what they finished with. What I was saying is I don't remember as many experts expecting them to come in and be instant stars, maybe Selby, the way they were predicting it for Grimes.

i think a lot of that hype, though, is directly from the way Self talked about him

i didn't watch the summer games, but was excited for Grimes simply because Self was gushing...and it didn't seem like typical coach-speak

I agree.

It's interesting, among this group that's being discussed, that only Diallo ended up having a meaningful NBA career.

Does that sort of mean he was the biggest bust (while at KU)?

And/or that the others were everyone's busts?

Diallo was by far the most raw of the group. So not surprising.

I will never understand why Self recruits very raw bigs who will be OADs. He doesn't do great with them because he can't trust them enough to play them. I guess you can't turn them away, but guys like Diallo don't fit the mold for the kinds of freshman Self trusts to play, and he was never going to stay for more than 1 year. Cliff similar, but less raw. Embiid the outlier as we can now see his rapid development capabilities are unique and rare.

Now diallo is developing decent offensive arsenal and his speed length and quickness are the perfect fit for today's NBA.....he's going to turn into a Serge Ibaka/Paskal Siakam type player over the next few years. He's still super young and showing tons of progress.

Selden turned out to be pretty good overall but his freshman year was nothing what anyone expected him to be. I put Grimes in that Selden freshman year category only because both of those guys played all year and didn’t have outside distractions like Cliff, Selby and Diallo did.

I’m still holding out for Grimes to turn it around. Waiting for him to have a break out run that gets this team to a Final Four.

Yep, production and talent level, Grimes looks the most like Selden at the same age. (Selden better athlete, Grimes the better shooter).

The only difference is Selden was thought of as a 2-year player and Grimes a OAD. Grimes just looks like he needs another year. It's in there somewhere.
