COVID-19 numbers
Re: COVID-19 numbers
The US for profit healthcare is going to follow the money and there ain't no money in Tonganoxie.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
They're still having to cancel elective procedures, which is killing the bottom line. At least that's what a buddy who works for a hospital in Duluth was telling me.TraditionKU wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 9:15 pm they should receive their proportional share, based on need
doesn’t seem like that’s what’s happening at all, presuming the reports are true

Prisons or hospitals?TraditionKU wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 8:53 pm seems like states have been cutting funding to rural hospitals since long before this mess
Hospitals provide no ability to count patients as residents for purposes of gerrymandering.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
In my life of many trips to the hospital, none were elective. How many boob jobs and face lifts do the hospitals need?

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Also, Id rather help hospitals than airlines. Let the airlines fail, save the hospitals. It just seems like an odd thing to be upset about.
Just Ledoux it
Re: COVID-19 numbers
the airlines wouldn't necessarily fail. They would simply have to sell some stocks and/or put assets down as collateral to get a bank loan, except that big business hates capitalism.
Re: COVID-19 numbers
Why then are the hospitals not taking "elective" surgeries and laying people off? Is there some mandate that they commit financial suicide or are people just not going to the doctor?

Re: COVID-19 numbers
I know that in Oregon and Washington all non-life saving surgeries are banned currently.

Re: COVID-19 numbers
Even more reason to not bail out the airlines and to spend that money on the hospitals

Re: COVID-19 numbers
I have a buddy in iowa that is an ear/nose/throat surgeon. Same thing. Hes had 2 surgeries since this started that was allowed to be performed.

all hospitals are in that same boat
everyone should get as much help as reasonably possible, whether big or small

Sure, sure. I had thought you were saying the hospitals that aren't dealing with the 'rona shouldn't be getting aid. My mistake.TraditionKU wrote: ↑Wed Apr 15, 2020 9:03 ambut that’s not a unique situation for themMjl wrote: ↑Tue Apr 14, 2020 10:07 pmThey're still having to cancel elective procedures, which is killing the bottom line. my wife was supposed to have a second eye surgery right before shit hit the fan...like, second week of march i think. it’s deemed “elective” and so was postponed indefinitely. utah, and SLC is in pretty good shape as far as covid-based strain on the local healthcare system, but 1) better to be safe than sorry as far as subjecting one’s self to elevated risk unnecessarily, and 2) no need to pull resources (PPE and people) from the “front lines” for non-essential proceedures
Re: COVID-19 numbers
It's somewhat reassuring to know that as far as I can tell, it's your surgeon and not some administrator or bureaucrat who decides whether your surgery can wait, or not.
...In 2011, surgical stays accounted for roughly 48 percent of hospitalization costs, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality reported...
Another source I came across said that in 2009, there were 48 million surgeries performed in the US.
(Don't know if that was only hospital-based surgeries, or if it included ambulatory surgery centers too. My guess is, that the figure includes both.)
